Rabbi Joel Roth

Rabbi Joel Roth, associate
professor of Talmud and Rab-
binics at The Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America, will be one of the
guest lecturers at the
seminary's "Sunday at the
Seminary . . . In Detroit," a
special one-day session to be
held 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. Rabbi Roth
will talk about "Women in
Jewish Law and Ritual." He
will be joined by Dr. Raymond
P. Scheindlin, provost and
associate professor of
medieval Hebrew literature;
and by Rabbi Mayer E.
Rabinowitz, librarian and
associate professor of Talmud.
Rabbi Roth came to the
seminary after completing
his B.A. at Wayne State
University in Detroit, his
home town. During his stu-
dent days, he participated in
the Herbert H. Lehman In-
stitute of Talmudic Ethics, a
special studies program. He
received his master's degree
and rabbinic ordination
(1968) at the seminary.
Following his ordination,
Rabbi Roth was appointed to
the faculty of the seminary.
He also continued his studies
toward a Ph.D. degree in
Talmud, which he received in
1973. In addition to his
teaching post, Rabbi Roth has
held four administrative posi-
tions at the seminary, having
served as dean of students at
the Seminary College, direc-
tor of the Melton Research
Center for Jewish Education
and associate dean and dean
of the Rabbinical School.
Rabbi Roth was appointed
to the Committee on Jewish
Law and Standards of the
Rabbinical Assembly in 1978,
and is currently serving as its
chairman.
Dr. Scheindlin will deliver
a lecture on "Seminary: the
First Hundred Years . . . and
the Second."

After completing his
undergraduate degree in
Oriental studies at the
University of Pennsylvania,
Dr. Scheindlin entered the
seminary. Awarded a number
of prizes for his academic
achievements as a student
there, he received the degree
of Master of Hebrew
Literature in 1963 and was
ordained as a rabbi in 1965.
He earned his Ph.D. degree in
Arabic language and litera-
ture in the department of
Middle East languages and
cultures at Columbia
University.
Among his writings, Dr.
Scheindlin has written the
libretto for Miriam and the
Angel of Death, a modern,
Jewish opera commissioned
by and performed at the
Jewish Theological Seminary
in honor of its Year of the
Library celebration.
He has served on the facul-
ty at Cornell, McGill and
New York Universities.
Before joining the seminary's
faculty as an associate pro-
fessor in 1974, he taught in

the high school department of
the Teachers Institute and
the preparatory division of
the Rabbinical Department
at the seminary.
He also has served as
spiritual leader of Cong. Beth
Israel Anshei Emes in
Brooklyn, N.Y. Dr. Scheindlin
is affiliated with the Middle
East Studies Association, the
American Association of
Teachers of Arabic, the
American Oriental Society,
the American Academy for
Jewish Research and the
Association of Jewish Studies,
on whose board he has served.

speak on "Jewish Law and
Business Ethics!'
