Ephraim Jacob Simon will
share his bar mitzvah, by pro-
xy, with a Soviet Jewish
youth, Valensas Glinskene, of
Kaunas (Lithuania), U.S.S.R.,
9 a.m. Sunday, at Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses.
Ephraim is the son of Lenore
and Caleb Simon of
Birmingham.
Valensas has attained the
age of bar mitzvah, but is
unable to worship freely in
the Soviet Union. To
dramatize Valensas' plight
and to express concern for his
future, Ephraim will sym-
bolically share the bimah
with \ alensas.
Valensas'
father,
Stanislavas, is a biologist. He
was dismissed from his posi-
tion as a teacher of biology
immediately following his re-
quest for emigration to Israel
in 1980. His mother was
allowed to keep her position
as a pediatrician. Valensas
has a sister, Dalia.
Although the Glinskenes
have relatives in Israel,
Valensas' great-aunt and
cousin, Riva Dugvsky and
Meri Subotsky, Soviet of-
ficials have refused the Glin-
skenes' visa request on the
basis of "insufficient kinship!'

with Eduard Lutsker, son of
