"The Book Casino, Wonder
Bar, Flame Show Bar, Club
Gay Haven, Bowery, Oriole
Terrace, Frank Gagen's,
Elmwood Casino in Windsor,
Alamo and so many more
night spots we remember pro-
vided enough entertainment
and variety to keep us
stepping.
"And there was no shortage
of places to wind up an even-
ing on the town. Darbys was
the first choice of many. Robin
Hood's, Sutton and Clemens
and Brothers on Livernois
were frequented by those who
wanted to prolong their
nights out with coffee and
sociability.
Now if you want to see stars
like Sammy Davis, you turn
on TV instead of driving over
to the Elmwood. We'll pro-
bably never see another
Elmwood Casino or Darbys.
There'll be no second time
around for the glittering
places where we dined, danc-

powerful new emancipation
movement called Women's
Liberation.
"Many women followed the
doctrine of Women's Lib and
the teachings of Friedan. By
1977, the first lady of the lib-
bers was back in the kitchen
and so were many other
emancipated housewives.
"Friedan was considering
making soup from scratch,
putting zucchini or avocado or
watercress, yogurt and
spinach into a blender. She
was going to buy a big tureen
and some large bowls so she
could have people over to din-
ner again. She wasn't an-
nouncing defection from the
women's movement. She said
she didn't want to be depriv-
ed of the sensuous joy of
scrambling eggs for a man
she loved or plying her son
with chicken soup. She
wondered why she had lost
touch with her female roots,
those generations of women
who expressed their love with
chicken soup. After her
divorce, she gradually stopped
having friends over for
dinner. -
"To the joy of many
housewives, she decided that
the conflicts and rebellion
over the woman's role made
ladies lose their zest for
creative cooking. And when
