Then again, why are so many comedians Jewish? Is it something in the seltzer? In the gene pool? "It has nothing to do with Jewish genes," he says. "You find the answer in history. "Jewish peole have always been persecuted; they need something to help them bat- tle back. Jews have always been out of the mainstream." Humor, adds Mason, has helped them swim against the tide. Humor may also have helped Mason overcome feel- ings of his own inadequacy. "I felt that I was left out of my own family," he says. "I was the fourth son after three genius brothers. One, Ber- nard, graduated from high school at 2, then college at 4. He didn't get 100 on his tests, he got 200. "I was the idiot of the fami- ly," he says. "They considered me the Dumbo of the family." "Dumbo" can fly on his own now. Indeed, Mason reported- ly helped with the publication of his brother Bernard's book, With Fury Poured Out — A Torah Perspective on the Holocaust. The Torah has taught Jackie Mason a thing or two about life; what it hasn't taught him is how to deal with Jews who feel threaten- ed by the comic's Jewishness. "I'm always hearing from other Jews that I'm too Jewish," he says, angry. "Fun- ny, the gentiles think I'm very funny, but my fellow Jews think I'm too Jewish." The Kibbitzer is not kid- ding as he says this. Anti- Semitism, acknowledges Mason, sometimes begins at home. But tell Jackie Mason he looks and sounds Jewish, and he says, "God bless you!" He is proud of the characteristics that separate Jew from gentile. "Every Jew is an expert; every Jew loves food," he says. "What do you think Jews talk about for breakfast? Where to eat lunch. At lunch, where should we have dinner. Din- ner, where should we have cof- fee?" - And then there is the ultimate dilemma: "Where should we have cake?" There is a chuckle in Mason's voice, which seems only appropriate. After the pain of breaking from his family's rabbinical tradition, of weathering the Sullivan controversy, of parrying over Jews' barbs that he sounds too Jewish, Jackie Mason has arrived a hit on Broadway. And now Jackie Mason is having the last laugh. ❑ 39715 W. 10 Mile Rd. • Farmington Hills • 474.3033 NEWLY REMODELED — MORE SEATING HOMEMADE LUNCH SPECIALS DINNER SPECIALS •STUFFED CANTALDPE WITH •CHICKEN OR TUNA SALAD •ASSORTED FRESH FRUIT PLATE •TUNA, SALMON & SARDINE PLATE • OUR DELICIOUS DELI SANDWICHES INCLUDE •FRESH WHITE ASH •BBQ RIBS & CHICKEN COMBINATION •HOMEMADE FOOD NIGHTLY •CHOICE STEAKS & CHOPS •AUTHENTIC GREEK FOOD •BAKED LAMB & LAMB CHOPS •BROILED CHICKEN BREAKFAST SPECIALS 7DAYSAWEEK 7 DAYS A WEEK DIFFERENT OMELETTE Mon.-Fri. $1.99 EGGS BENEDICT Sat. & Sun. $2.45 7DAYSAWEEK CUP OF SOUP OR COLE SLAW LOX & SABLE PLATE ANYTIME 10% SENIOR DISCOUNT (Except Breakfast) Restaurant AT APPLEGATE SQUARE Southfield Northwestern Hwy. at Inkster Rd.
