Hearing Loss
Workshop Topic
Award-winning entertainer
Nanette Fabray will lead an
afternoon devoted to identi-
fying and living with hearing
loss on Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. at
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch of the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
The workshop, entitled
"Hear, There and
Everywhere!" is being
presented by the LeVine In-
stitute on Aging, the senior
adult department of the
Center and Sinai Hospital.
Fabray will discuss how
she conquered her own hear-
ing loss and precede addi-
tional speakers who will talk
about: "How to Live in the
World When You Can't Hear
It as Well" presented by Dr.
Keith Lepard, medical direc-
tor of SHHIPS Clinic (Sinai
Hospital Hearing Impaired
Professional Services); "Iden-
tifying Hearing Loss in
Adults" by Donald LoBelle,
senior clinical audiologist at
Sinai; "Maximizing com-
munication" with Tamy
Chelst, department of
audiology at Wayne State
University; and "Ad-
vancements of the80's" with
Barbara Washington, sales
consultant, Michigan Bell.
Free hearing screening by
the audiology staff of Sinai
will be offered. There is a fee.

Prof. Norma Goldman will
speak on The Jews of Rome
at the Jewish Historical
Society meeting on Oct. 19 at
8 p.m. The meeting will be
held in the Jewish Vocational
Services Building, 29699
Southfield Road, Southfield.
Her illustrated talk is spon-
sored by the Michigan Center
for Humanities.
Prof. Goldman has been a
senior lecturer in the Depart-
ment of Greek and Latin at
Wayne State University for
40 years.
There will be refreshments.

Funds Go To
JARC
The Berkley Knights of
Columbus Council 3830
recently made the Jewish
Association for Retarded
Citizens recipients of a fund-
raising drive. JARC was one
of several organizations ser-
ving individuals with mental
retardation that received
funds from the chapter's
Tootsie Roll drive held in
April. •
The contribution to JARC
will directly benefit the
Shirley T. Medow Haverim
Home, a group home
operated by JARC located in
Huntington Woods: The gift
will be used for the residents'
participation in cultural and
recreational events in the
community.
Members of the council
presented the gift at a recent
Huntington Woods City
Commission meeting. This is
the first year that JARC was
a recipient of the drive.
Schreiber Takes
New WSU Post
Bertram M. Schreiber of
Southfield, is the new chair-
man of the Wayne State
University department of
mathematics.
Schreiber came to WSU in
1968 as an assistant pro-
fessor and became an
associate professor in 1971,
and full professor in 1978.
He also was a visiting pro-
fessor at both the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem and
Michigan State University,
and a senior postdoctoral
fellow at the University of
Edinburgh.
Temple Offers
Adult Education
Temple Emanu-El will pre-
sent its annual Holiday
Workshop Series, an adult
education program, which
will focus on "How to
Celebrate Shabbat and the
major ,Jewish Holidays in
Your Home With Your
Family".
Beginning Oct. 26, the
Series will be offered at Tem-
ple Emanu-El on Mondays at
7:15 p.m., and in West
Bloomfield during the day.

Guide Training
Sessions at HMC
The Holocaust Memorial
Center will open a new guide
training session on Tuesday
at 7 p.m. at the HMC. The
two sessions, scheduled for
Tuesday and Oct. 20, will be
conducted by Dr. Sidney
Bolkosky.
Volunteers who wish to
train as docents and join in
the task of educating visitors
about the Holocaust will be
able to schedule either
daytime or evening hours for
the remainder of the eight-
session training program.
