Eventually Jacobs, who
describes himself as a "Mes-
sianic congregation planter,"
and his co-directors, listed as
Harold Brickner and Mark
Kinzer, hope to establish a
permanent congregation in
its own building.
Whether this will be
designated a church,
synagogue or congregation
has not yet been decided, says
Jacobs, but it will be design-
ed as the primary place of
worship for its members. "I
would rather that Jewish
believers formed their own
congregations rather than go
into others,' he says.
He is here to "present the
facts for Yeshua" through the
Friday meetings, bible
studies, talking to those who
are interested and handing
out leaflets "to anyone who
will take them" — not to any
one section of the community,
he says.
His work and the ministry's
expenses are funded by dona-
tions "from friends, both in
and outside the Detroit area,
who believe in what we're do-
ing."
Jacobs himself became a
Christian 12 years ago, at the
age of 18,, after becoming in-
terested in the Messianic pro-
phecies and reading the New
Testament. Subsequently, he
became a board member of
Jews for Jesus. He declines to
comment on why he left that
position or on his relationship
with the group, except to say
that Shema Yisrael is not af-
filiated with that or any other
organization.
He does, however, defend
Jews for Jesus against
counter-missionary charges of
manipulation and deceit.
Neither their beliefs nor their
methods "are at all deceptive"
he maintains.
His own approach will con-
tinue to be "totally up front,"
he says, indicating one of his
leaflets which states clearly
"Jesus Made Us Kosher!" Ac-
cusations of deceit and
misrepresentation are not on-
ly untrue, says Jacobs, but a
"smokescreen" obscuring
"the real issue: Is Jesus the
Messiah? If He is, how should
we as Jews deal with Him?"
"Belief in Christ is not the
issue here," says Batya
Schreiber. "We do not deny
any individual's right to
make a choice of their own
free will." It is the "distortion
and misrepresentation" of
Judaism in Hebrew Chris-
tianity and the
"unscrupulous proselytism"
of its missionaries which
countermissionaries are
protesting.
