Beth Shalom in Oak Park on Oct. 23 and 24 when the Conservative Jewish synagogue honors its clergy for their combined 34 years of service to the congregation and to the metro Detroit area. Synagogue members and their families, along with peo- ple from surrounding com- munities, are invited to a special Kabbalat Shabbat service on Oct. 23 and to a dinner-dance on Oct. 24 in recognition of the contribu- tions of Rabbi David Nelson, Cantor Samuel Greenbaum, and Ritual Director Samuel Semp. Sabbath eve services at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 will open the weekend activities. Special presentations will be made, and a special Oneg Shabbat will follow the service where everyone can greet the clergy. Refreshments will be served. On Oct. 24 at 8:30 p.m., the officers and board of direc- tors of the synagogue, will present a dinner-dance in the synagogue's social hall in honor of the rabbi, cantor, and ritual director. Called "A Night to Remember," the event is black tie optional. For information and reserva- tions, call the synagogue, 547-7970. Rabbi Nelson came to Beth Shalom in 1972 as its spiritual leader. He is a past presiding officer of the Detroit Round Table of the National Conference of Chris- tians and Jews, former na- tional board member of the Academy of Parish Clergy, and the Jewish represen- tative of the New Religious Movements Committee—a pilot program of the Chris- tian Communications Council. He has been a member of the Total Living Commission of the city of Southfield and chaplain for the Southfield Police Department. Since 1982, Rabbi Nelson has been instrumental in establishing a Jewish chaplaincy at Royal Oak's Beaumont Hospital. Among his rabbinic and Jewish communal activities, Rabbi Nelson is the past president of the Conservative Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, a member of the Rabbinical Commission of Metropolitan Detroit and the Rabinical Assembly of America, chairman of the Michigan-Ohio-Kentucky Region of the Rabbinical Assembly and a participant in the _ first Rabbinic Leader- ship Institute at his alma mater, Brandeis University. He has been director of the Michigan Region United Synagogue of America, member of the National Latin Affairs Committee of the Anti-Defamation League, co- chairman of the Catholic- Jewish Conference "Understanding the Jewish Experience", scholar-in- residence of the Butzel Fami- ly Camp, and is a board member of the Jewish Association for Retarded Citizens. Cantor Greenbaum was engaged by the congregation in 1973. Along with his can- torial and pastoral respon- sibilities, he works with religious school students to train for their b'nailb'not mitzvah, teaches adult educa- tion classes in Jewish music and synagogue skills, con- ducts the youth and adult choirs, and serves as the youth director for the synagogue. Cantor Greenbaum is a regular speaker and per- former for Jewish organiza- tions such as the Jewish Home for the Aged, Federa- tion Apartments, Jewish Community Center and Jewish Vocational Service. Cantor Greenbaum trained as a mohel under Rabbi Harry Bronstein of Brooklyn, New York and has practiced as a certified mohel for 21 years. He is a member of the Can- tors Assembly of America and has served as president of the Tri-State Region Can- tors Council and of the Can- tors Council of Detroit. Ritual Director Semp join- ed the synagogue in 1982. He coordinates matters pertain- ing to ritual and synagogue services, leads daily morning and evening services, reads Torah at Sabbath services, and pays personal attention to assisting members with special events in their lives such as observing the an- niversary of a family member's death, gravestone unveilings, visits to the ill, and family celebrations in the synagogue. He also teaches seventh grade in the Beth Shalom Religious School. He has held teaching, ad- ministrative and counseling positions at Camp Ramah in Canada, Beth Tzedec Con- gregational School and the United Synagogue Day School in Toronto, Canada, and Beth Israel Synagogue and Hebrew Religious School in Flint, Michigan.
