(Marilyn) Chaben; and two
grandchildren.

Yosef Tabenkin

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Yosef
Tabenkin, commander of the
Palmach-Harel Brigade
which broke the siege of
Jerusalem during the War of
Independence, died on Rosh
Hashanah. He was 66.
Known as "Yosefle," Mr.
Tabenkin was the son of Yit-
zhak Tabenkin, a contem-
porary of David Ben-Gurion
and founder and long-time
leader of the Kibbutz
Hameuchad Federation and
of the Achdut Haavoda Party.
The younger Tabenkin also
was in the central committee
of Shlemut Haaretz, which
believed in the concept of a
"whole Israel." After his ar-
my career, Mr. Tabenkin
studied engineering at the
Haifa Technion and in recent
years had headed various kib-
butz industrial firms.

Irving Lipson

Irving I. Lipson, general
manager of Serwer's
Wholesale Hardware and
Restaurant Supply for 55
years, died Oct. 4 at age 75.
Born in Beaufort, S.C., Mr.
Lipson was a member of
Zager-Stone Lodge of B'nai
B'rith and a past president
and current blood bank chair-
man of the lodge.
He leaves his wife, Bessie;
three sons, Lawrence of
Chicago, Ill., Robert and
James; three brothers,
Samuel, Joseph and Mickey;
two sisters , Mrs. Birdie Levy
and Mrs. Fred Potalsky; and
three grandchildren.

Morey Charmer

Morey Charmer, a furniture
manufacturer's represen-
tative, died Oct. 5 at age 77.
Born in Detroit, Mr.
Charmer was one of the
organizers of the Furniture
Travelers of Michigan. He
was a member of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, Mosaic Lodge
of the Masons, Moslem
Shrine, Tam O'Shanter Coun-
try Club, Florida Lodge of
B'nai B'rith, the Zionist
Organization of America, Ci-
ty of Hope, and was past presi-
dent of the Furniture Club of
Detroit.
He leaves his wife, Millie; a
daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Deb-

bie) Silber; a brother, David;
two sisters, Mrs. Rose Slutsky
and Mrs. Bertha Sheps; and
four grandchildren.

Rebbe Twersky

Samuel Lucas

Samuel B. Lucas, a phar-
macist for more than 50
years, died Oct. 2 at age 78.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa.,
Mr. Lucas lived 73 years in
Detroit. He attended Cass
Tech and earned a pharmacy
degree at the Detroit In-
stitute of Technology. He was
a member of the Mosaic
Lodge of the Masons. He is
survived by his wife, Ida; two
daughters, Mrs. Gaston
(Marilyn) Berman Habsburg
of Northbrook, Ill., and
Suzanne; a sister, Sonia Wais;
and one granddaughter.

Elmer Zuckerman

Elmer Zuckerman, former
vice president of Allen In-
dustries in Detroit, died Oct.
3 at age 87.
A former Detroiter, Mr.
Zuckerman resided in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla., at the time
of his death. He was a former
member of Temple Beth El
and the Franklin Hills Coun-
try Club.
He leaves his wife, Lucille;
a son, James; four grand-
children and two
great-grandchildren.

Avraham Gagin

Jerusalem — Prof. Avraham
Gagin, associate professor of
atmospheric sciences at the
Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and Israel's
renowned "rainmaker," died
Sept. 25 at age 54.
Prof. Gagin, who headed
the Israel Rainfall Enhance-
ment Project, was widely
known in Israel and abroad
for his pioneering work in
cloud seeding to increase
rain.

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
oldest Chasidic rebbe,
Avraham Joshua Heschel
Twersky, of Machnowka, died
Oct. 2 at age 93.
One of the heads of the
Council of Torah Orthodox
Agudat Israel Party, he was a
practicing Chasidic rebbe in
the Soviet Union before com-
ing to Israel in 1966.
When Rabbi Twersky
received permission to make
aliyah, he managed to smug-
gle out a family treasure, a
Torah scroll that had reputed-
ly belonged to the Baal Shem
Thy, the 18th Century founder
of Chasidism.
