B'NAI MITZVAH I ms. THREADS ALWAYS 20%-60% BELOW RETAIL s SC6\3 Bat Mitzvah Twins Her Rite Risa Tisdale, daughter of Yolanda and David Tisdale, will twin her bat mitzvah tonight at Temple Israel with Maya Lekhtman of the Soviet Union. Maya is the daughter of Solomon and Tzivia Lekhtman, of Beltsy. The family has been seeking to emigrate from Russia since their first refusal in 1973. Lekhtman is an electrician. He applied for immigration to Israel with his parents, and all were denied permission because of his army service. The Lekhtmans were mar- ried in 1973, and in 1974, both families again applied for exit visas. The younger Lekhtmans were refused. The parents left for Israel, and are now residents of Kiryat Yam. Maya was born just a month after her grandparents left for Israel. Meanwhile, her father has lost his job and he has been unemployed since mak- ing application. Attempts have been made to contact the Lekhtmans, but all have been unsuccessful. In addition to twinning her bat mitzvah, Risa will be the first Temple Israel student to have her bat mitzvah under the temple's participation in Mazon, the Jewish response to hunger. Under the Mazon program, three percent of the money spetn for Risa's bat mitzvah will go to fight hunger local- ly, nationally and around the world. Risa, who is a student at Hillel Day School as well as in the Temple Israel Religious School, for many years was a member of the Temple Israel Junior Choir. Bat Mitzvah 'Twin Emigrates Kara Friedman, daughter of Lee and Annette Fried- man, was scheduled to have twinned her bat mitzvah with refusenik Irina Fuksshimov, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Temple Kol Ami. However, Irina and her family recently emigrated from the Soviet Union and are now living in San Francisco, Calif. Konstantin and Sofia, Irina's parents, had applied for permission to emigrate to Israel in 1979 and their ap- plication was refused the same year due to insufficient kinship. Kara will celebrate her Rus- sian Jewish twin's new-found freedom as she marks her bat mitzvah Saturday morning. 31205 Orchard Lake Road Tanzingtort KIls, MI 855-4464 Mortgages for home buyers, Refinancing, and Home Equity Mortgages for investors. A picture is drawn of a man who managed to stay human amidst inhumanity....We should be glad such a detailed account of a true survivor...will remain for ages to come." Claude Lanzrnann: (Creator of Shoah) "An adventure...almost novelesque in the extraordinary succession of miracles which enable the young man to remain among the living so as to eventually tell his story forty years later with Voltairesque ferocity and often sheer and invigorating joy. "From one ordeal to another, outwitting death time after time, Henry Orenstein, an intelligent, soberly pessimistic Candide, is possessed by a will to live so prodigious that he seems able to maintain his spirit while overcoming the most improbable odds." Menachem Begin: (Former Prime Minister of Israel) "...An important contribution to bring out the facts about the cruelty of Nazi Germany, of the heroic efforts for the survival of our brethren." Nathan Perlmutter: (Former National Director, Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith) "Riveting. Because the book is innocent of the affectations and devices of fiction, it is so overwhelming an experience that half a century later you are there, experiencing the fears and, remarkably, experiencing the will to live. Orenstein prevails as did Jewry and, reading him, we do too." Lucy S. Dawidowicz: (Author of The War Against the Jews) "This is a stirring account of a struggle for life against all odds. Once you begin this book, you won't be able to put it down." Allan A. Ryan, Jr.: (Former director of the Office of Special Investigations of the Justice Department) "I Shall Live is a poignant and deeply moving testament to the human spirit, and to fero- cious courage in the face of hopelessness... No reader can be left untouched by it." BEAUFORT BOOKS PUBLISHER S 9 East 40th Street, New York, NY 10016 Distributed by Kampmann & Co. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 101
