Cynthia Rhodes and Patrick Swayze in "Dirty Dancing."
It's 'Dirty Dancing'
At A Catskills Resort
MORT ZIEVE
Special to The Jewish News
y
ou don't have to be
Jewish to enjoy Dirty
Dancing (rated:
PG-13) but it helps.
This light, lively, lovely tale
of romance in the Catskills
will be especially appealing
to anyone who knows this
millieu. Actually, anyone who
likes a good time can enjoy
the souffle of a plot and the
ebullience of the dancing.
As you can tell from the PG
rating, the dancing isn't real-
ly "dirty?' So don't let the ti-
tle scare you away. This is
definitely not an exploitative
teen-oriented opus. The dan-
cing is the hyped-up kind of
stuff that you see only in
movies. No one in the '60s or
at any other time, ever danc-
ed like this.
But then you're not meant
to take anything in this
movie too seriously. It's all a
gentle fable.
The Idealistic Adored
Daughter who encounters
Sex with the Working Class
Dance Instructor Stud; The
Adoring Father; The Spoiled
Sister; The Girl In Trouble;
The Nasty Resort Owners .. .
they're all here, all expected,
and all welcome. You know
what's coming, but it feels so
good when it gets there.
Jennifer Grey, daughter of
Joel Grey, is delightful and
winning as the girl, and
Patrick Swayze is attractive
and believable - as the guy. In
a good supporting cast, Jack
Weston stands out as the
hypocritical hotel owner who
chafes his staff while charm-
ing his guests.
Go, go, enjoy, enjoy.
If love is like it's portrayed
in A Man In Love (rated: R),
I'll take oatmeal. The truth is
that we all know love is
nothing like this. What we
have here is a sloppy, soppy,
soporific women's comic book
version of love. It's so somber,
melancholy, and slow!
The leading character,
Peter Coyote, is suppo-sed to
be a great American movie
star making a film in Italy.
We know he's a great star
because he throws
temperamental tantrums on
schedule. He has an affair
with one of the actresses in
the movie-within-a-movie.
She is very pretty but seems
to be totally brainless.
The only character I found
the least bit believable in this
overwrought, under-thought
mess was Peter Reigert. As
the long-suffering all-around
assistant to the star, he is low-
key, likeable, and real, as he
was in Local Hero.
Fatal Attraction (rated: R)
has the two main ingredients
that seem to make for success
in movies today: sex and
violence. If you like liberal
doses of both, you'll like this.
Michael Douglas, a happily
married man, has a one-night
stand with Glenn Close, who
turns out to be a nut. Despite
his attempts to get rid of her,
she chases him relentlessly,
eventually terrorizing him,
his wife, and his child.
You know the outcome from
the moment the picture
begins. You know that even-
tually, as in all melodramas,
the good guy will come out
OK and the bad guy (in this
case Close) will get her just
desserts.
There are plenty of scares
along the way, even if they are
irrational. You know, if he
had the sense to lock the door
earlier, she couldn't get in
and threaten the family, and
all that kind of thing. But if
the characters acted rational-
ly, there wouldn't be a movie.
