Democrats Are Not Facing Up
To Divisive Jackson Candidacy

REED D. RUBINSTEIN

t is now all but certain that Jesse
Jackson will again be running for the
Democratic nomination for president of
the United States. Despite the muted ef-
forts of the Democratic leadership to play
down the viability of Jackson's candidacy,
and Mr. Jackson's very public effort to tone
down his rhetoric and present a more
palatable appearance to the voting public,
the party remains faced with the explosive
problem of dealing with a powerful minori-
ty politician who also happens to be the
single most anti-Jewish public figure since
the days of Father Coughlin.
Over the course of his political career,
Mr. Jackson has repeatedly shown great
hostility to Jews and Jewish interests. In-
deed, a review of Jackson's public
statements strongly indicate that he holds
many of the same delusions as the
paradigm anti-Semite. For example,
Jackson has railed against the "Jewish-
dominated media" and has made common
cause with those elements such as the
Palestine Liberation Organization that
seek to annihilate any vestige of Jewish
political sovereignty in the land of Israel.
For Jackson to have embraced Yassir
Arafat was the moral equivalent of a white
politician publicly embracing the leader of
the Ku Klux Klan.
Most telling, however, was Jackson's
handling of the Farrahkan affair. Lewis
Farrahkan, a Black Muslim minister with
a small following among certain disaffected
members of the black community, was a
strong Jackson supporter. Farrahkan,

however, publicly termed Judaism a "gut-
ter religion." Due to the pressure of other
powerful Democratic leaders, including
many blacks, Jackson reluctantly-
disassociated himself only from Far-
rahkan's • remarks. He refused to
disassociate himself from Farrahkan the
man. In Jesse's camp it seems, there is
room for Jew hatred.
To an extent, Jackson's attitudes con-
cerning Jews and Jewish interests are a
reflection of his social class background.
Surprisingly, educated blacks are among
the most anti-Semitic of all groups in
American society. Despite a long-standing
commitment by Jews to the principles of
non-discrimination and individual rights
for all citizens, certain educated blacks
seem to have adopted Malcolm X's view
that Jews are among the most substantial
barriers to black economic and political
progress.
Due to the size of their community and
their voting loyalty, blacks are an impor-
tant part of the Democratic coalition. Thus,
to the extent that Jackson is perceived as
a black leader, he becomes a major player
within Democratic circles. Jews however,
play a major financial and organizational
role in the party that far outweighs their
actual numbers in the population at large.
Plainly, Jews cannot be expected to
tolerate, much less support, a political par-
ty that genuflects before an anti-Semite.
Thus, Jesse Jackson's rise to power has
confronted the party professionals with a
major ' dilemma; for should black-Jewish
relations explode, the party may be serious-
ly injured.
As a result, the party has attempted to
play down the rift and avoid choosing bet-
