Jews Asked
To Fight Hunger

Los Angeles — On Yom Kip-
pur, as Jews throughout the
world fast and pray, rabbis in
more than 1,000 congrega-
tions in the U.S. and Canada
will urge their congregants to
donate the dollars they would
normally spend on food that
day to Mazon, a Jewish
response to hunger.
Founded less than two years
ago by Leonard Fein, former
editor of Moment magazine,
Mazon — the Hebrew word for
food — seeks to combat
hunger around the world by
raising funds for established
agencies, both Jewish and
non-Jewish, that feed poor
people.
Mazon's concept for raising
funds is an unusual one. It
calls on Jewish families
celebrating a simcha — a wed-
ding, a bar or bat mitzvah, a
birthday or an anniversary —
to add a self-imposed three
percent tax to the cost of the
function and contribute it to
Mazon for the fight against
hunger.

Mazon's Yom Kippur project
and/or to donate an addi-
tional three percent of the
cost of their family's next

Shcharansky
Warns West

Baltimore — Natan
Shcharansky emerged from a
meeting at the White House
with President Reagan last
Wednesday reassured about
the Administration's support
for Soviet Jewry, but concern-
ed about the "complacency"
of the American public.
"We cannot expect the Ad-
ministration to be tougher on
this issue than the American
public," said the former Soviet
refusenik.
Shcharansky was concern-
ed about American
"euphoria" over the Shultz-
Shevardnadze meetings, the
possibility of an arms agree-
ment and the upcoming sum-
mit. He stressed that Gor-
bachev needs improved rela-
tions with the West to end the
technological gap between
the Soviet Union and the
West. If the West adopts a
"firm" posture regarding
human rights improvements
in the USSR and Jewish
emigration, said Sharansky,
"we can get much more from
Gorbachev than from any of
his predecessors."
