CAROL WALD

Lord, what is man that thou
regardest him? Or the son of
man, that thou takest ac-
count of him?
Man is like to vanity; his
days are as a shadow that
passeth away.
In the morning he bloometh
afresh, in the evening he is
cut down and withereth.
So teach us to number our
days that we may get us a
heart of wisdom .. .

Unions Refuse
Wage Accord

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A majori-
ty of the public employees
unions are refusing to accept
a new wage agreement signed
last Sunday by the Finance
Ministry and Histadrut. Only
two of the 15 unions covered
by the pact are willing to
ratify it.
The agreement provides a
wage increase of 75 Shekels
($50) • a month, beginning
November 1. It will be in ef-
fect for six months, pending
further negotiations. A five
day work weeks will be im-
plemented next year.
But rank and file members
of the clerical workers union
voiced dissatisfaction. They
called the pay raise, which
will net them only an addi-
tional 50 Shekels ($30) a
month, a "mere pittance."

Peres Holds
Talks With Shultz

United Nations (JTA) —
Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres said last week
that the improved relations
between Moscow and Wash-
ington would contribute to ef-
forts to achieve peace in the
Middle East.
He said that was the im-
pression he gained in a
20-minute talk with
Secretary of State George
Shultz. "The next few months
are very critical to the rela-
tions between the two super-
powers and the progress in
their discussions will affect
the chances for peace in the
Middle East," Peres said in a
briefing for Israeli reporters
here.
He said that Shultz told
him at their meeting at the
United Nations Plaza Hotel
that when he (Shultz) met
with Soviet Foreign Minister
Eduard Shevardnadze, their
conversation dealt with,
among other things, the issue
of human rights in the USSR,
and the peace process in the
Mideast.
