It is because Max Fisher
was the guide and adviser
that his friend Henry was
prompt in rejecting the threat
of an Arab boycott of "Israel.
Ford went much farther. He
increased the facilities for
completion of Ford cars and
trucks in Israel and the trade
relations became an obliga-
tion. The late Al May had a
role in these negotiations.
Henry Ford II and Max M.
Fisher went to Israel together
and one of their chief in-
terests was the Technion, the
Israel Institute of Technology,
the most important technical
university in the Middle East.
Ford admired the Technion,
joined in calling it "the MIT
of the Middle East," and his
,admiration for Israel kept
growing.
The Bible has suggested ac-
creditation to the Ford-Fisher
friendship in the famous
Jonathan and David tale of
deep loyalties. Deeply moved
by his loss, Fisher said: "My
dear friend Henry was a no-
ble human being. He had
loyalties that embrace fellow
humans regardless of their
faith or color. The Jewish peo-
ple and Israel have been
enriched by his courage and
his generosities. He was a
blessing for all of us."
Marjorie (Mrs. Max) Fisher
was so deeply affected by the
news of Henry Ford's passing
on Tuesday morning that all
she could say was: "Max and
I shared a great friendship
with him. He will always be
unforgettable."
So far, these references to
the new legacy under the
Ford name are very sketchy.
Much is yet deservedly to be
recorded about Henry Ford II
who acquired a humanitarian
designation with his rejection
of hatred and bigotry.
In his introduction to Henry
Ford and the Jews, (Stein and
Day) the author, Albert Lee
wrote:
As Philip Slomovitz, the
dauntless editor of the
Detroit Jewish News for
more than forty years, put
it: "Henry Ford II has
spent most of his life aton-
ing for his grandfather's
sins against the Jews."
Henry Ford II has been a
major contributor to the
United Jewish Appeal, the
Israel Emergency Fund,
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, and the Anti-
Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith, the organiza-
tion which fought so
valiantly against his
grandfather.
Henry Ford II also
established a Ford
assembly plant in Israel
and has steadfastly kept it
