FRIDAY, OCT. 2, 1987

The Jewish Association for
Retarded Citizens has begun
operation of the Benard L.
Maas Supported In-
dependence Program (Maas
SIP).
This program, made possi-
ble with a gift from the
Benard L. Maas Foundation,
allows developmentally
disabled adults to live in their
own apartments while conti-
nuing to receive support ser-
vices and training from staff
to increase their in-
dependence. To date, JARC
has purchased 13 con-
dominiums in southern
Oakland county and 18 par-
ticipants are now moving in-
to their new homes.
Many of the individuals in
the Maas SIP are moving
from JARC Haverim Homes
where they learned the skills
needed to live more in-
dependently. Before moving
into Haverim Homes, several
of the program participants
lived in state institutions.
Maas SIP provides an in-
terim level of residential in-
dependence for developmen-
tally disabled persons, filling
a gap in services that existed
between the Haverim Homes
that provide 24-hour supervi-
sion, and the DeRoy Apart-
ment Program which pro-
vides once-a-week assistance
to clients in their own apart-
ments. According to JARC,
many clients did not need the
24-hour supervision provided
in a Haverim Home, but were
not ready for the in-
dependence of the DeRoy
Program.
Services provided to Maas
SIP participants include
training in such areas as
menu planning, shopping,
budgeting, use of public
transportation, along with
assistance in daily problem

solving and counseling. A
"taxi" is available for clients
to sign up for transportation
when needed. Twenty-four
hour emergency assistance is
also available.

The gift from the Benard L.
Maas Foundation allowed
JARC to purchase the con-
dominiums. The program
receives operational funds
from the Michigan Depart-
ment of Mental Health and
Oakland County Community
Mental Health.
