Jesse Jackson presents the
Democratic party, as well as
the other Democratic
presidential contenders, with
a Faustian dilemma: To reap
the benefits of Jackson's
substantial political power
means nothing less than sell-
ing out in the fight against
race hatred. In 1948, the par-
ty was presented with a
similar dilemma. At that
time, Hubert Humphrey fac-
ed down the racist southern
white Democrats, and reaf-
firmed the party's institu-
tional commitment to equal
respect for all individuals
regardless of race or religion.
The party's performance in
1984, when it failed even to
pass a resolution condemning
anti-Semitism for fear of of-
fending Mr. Jackson, was less
admirable. It yet remains to
be seen whether in the corn-
ing months the party and the
other contenders for the
Democratic nomination will
follow Humphrey's
courageous lead, or simply go
to the devil.

Demjanjuk
Appeal Made

New York (JTA) — An
urgent appeal for defense
funds for John Demjanjuk, on
trial in Jerusalem for war
crimes allegedly committed
in the Treblinka death camp,
has been issued by his son-in-
law, Edward Nishni6.

Nishnic, president and ad-
ministrator of the John Dem-
janjuk Defense Fund in
Brooklyn, Ohio, a suburb of
Cleveland, sent a letter ad-
dressed to "Fellow Ukrai-
nians and Friends" asking
that they "act with Christian
conscience" in giving finan-
cial support needed in "the
tragic case of John Demjan-
juk."

Israel To Fight
Drug Abuse

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Education Ministry and the
police have joined forces to
combat one of the most
urgent problems confronting
Israeli society — the preven-
tion of drug abuse • by the
country's youth.
It is estimated that about
15,000 persons in Israel are
totally addicted to drugs and
between 150-200,000 are one-
time, occasional or constant
users.
