evidence submitted in earlier
chapters so that the reader is
led, as in a detective story, to
the final point of solving the
biblical riddle.
No dry-as-dust academic
volume, this exciting book is
for the interested student of
the Bible. The bibliography is
extensive, although curiously
enough, it includes no men-
tion of the notable works of
Nelson Glueck, Julian
Morgenstern, Sheldon Blank,
Moses Buttenweiser, Samuel
Sandmel or other significant
20th Century Jewish
scholars. Friedman's appen-
dix includes a helpful iden-
tification of the authors of the
Five Books of Moses.
Reading the Bible, as Fried-
man says, can never be quite
the same. You gain a new
depth of appreciation in
understanding how the Bi-
ble's stories came together,
how they fit a pattern of
historical perspective, how
they give an insight into the
ways of living and thinking
about God at a special time of
Jewish history. The Bible as
literature, the -Bible as
history, the Bible as
something sacred and special,
all become meaningful when
we begin to understand who
wrote the Bible.

NEWS

Massacre
Anniversary

Jerusalem (JTA) — Thnsions
ran high but there were few
incidents, none serious, as
Palestinians in the West
Bank marked the fifth an-
niversary of the Sabra and
Shatilla refugee camps
massacre Sept. 17
Arab youths threw stones at
Israeli military vehicles in
several parts of the territory.
Road blocks were set up and
Palestinian flags were raised.
Soldiers fired into the air and
used tear gas to disperse a
disorderly crowd of students
at the Islamic College in
Hebron. There were partial
business strikes in Nablus
and Ramallah, the principal
commercial centers in the
West Bank.
The Sabra and Shatilla
massacre in West Beirut was
carried out by Lebanese
Christian Phalangists in
September 1982, apparently
an act of revenge for the
assassination of Lebanese
President-elect Bashir
Gemayel, the Phalange Party
leader. Several hundred
Palestinian men, women and
children were killed or
wounded. The Israel Defense
Force was in occupation of
West Beirut at the time.
