SIMONE & JEANNE VITALE

A

intellectual audience — or his
political foes — of his purity.
No doubt he had calculated
the howls of outrage that
followed from those who con-
tinue to hold him personally
and irredeemably responsible
for Israel's most reckless
political and military
adventure.
Rather, he was aiming at
another target group alto-
gether — ordinary, middle-of-
the-road Israelis who sit in
their living rooms and ponder
whether they really would
pack up and leave if he ever
became prime minister.
If Sharon can persuade
them that there are two sides
to the Lebanon story — that
he is not the Haman of Israeli
politics — he will be well on
the way to rehabilitation. The
Israeli public is notoriously
forgiving of its leaders, and he
means to test that forgiveness
to its limits. -
There is something about
Sharon — easily the most
charismatic figure in Israeli
politics today — that evokes a
response from Israelis almost
in spite of themselves.
Perhaps it is his chutzpah, his
bravado, his vitality — his
quintessential Israeliness —
that strikes a chord. They
may hate him, but they never,
never ignore him.
And that may be his trump
card. Given the absence of
any other strong, credible
leader, Israelis might yet be
persuaded to give a slimmed-
down Ariel Sharon the
benefit of the doubt.
But persuading a large sec-
tion of the Israeli voting
public that "Arik, King of
Israel" can also be a prince of
peace is going to require more
of Sharon than merely losing
weight.

NEW YEAR

Haifa — Mycoplasmal
pneumonia, which doctors
have always had to wait two
weeks to diagnose, can now be
detected in a matter of hours,
allowing the physicians to ad-
minister appropriate treat-
ment immediately.
The speedy diagnosis is
available using a new kit
developed by Associate Pro-
fessor Yehudith Naot at the
Technion, Israel's Institute of
Technology. She developed a
method of detecting a specific
kind of antibody present on-
ly in the blood of mycoplasma-
infected patients.
