emotional high point in her
career. "I was at the State
Department when Sharansky
was with [Secretary of State]
Shultz," she said. "It was a
fantastic experience for me to
see him here, and to joke with

New York — U.S. Am-
bassador to Austria Ronald
Lauder said in an interview
that Austrians silently en-
couraged anti-Semitism by
sweeping it under the carpet.
Lauder, expected to leave
his post this autumn, is
himself Jewish and told Pro-
fil magazine that he and his
family were told by a Vien-
nese shop owner that Jews
were not welcome on the
premises.
Leaders of Vienna's Jewish
community have reported a
rise in anti-Semitism since
the U.S. Justice Department
decided in April to ban Presi-
dent Kurt Waldheim from en-
try because of his war record.
