Torah Ordered
Back To Donor
Philadelphia (JTA) — A rab-
binic court, ruling in lieu of
the Court of Common Pleas,
has ordered a Philadelphia
synagogue to return a Torah
to its donor or give him
another one worth at least
$10,000.
The decision by the five-
rabbi bet din led by Rabbi
Marvin Goldman is legally
binding and stems from a re-
quest by donor Meyer Neff,
now of Miami Beach.
The request had been
repeatedly denied since 1976
by Rabbi Daniel Parker of
Temple Zion and congrega-
tion officials.
In fact, an attorney for the
synagogue responded in 1983
that since more than 25 years
had passed since the loan, the
Torah was "considered by the
synagogue an integral part of
its assets and its ritual" and
should thus remain there, ac-
cording to the bet din's report.

New York state police have
ruled as an apparent suicide

tacks against Soviet events
and officials in New York
City.
The body of Jay Cohen, 24,
was found on the bed in his
room at the Homowack Hotel
in the Catskills. Police said
Cohen had died of an ap-
parent overdose of prescrip-
tion drugs.
Cohen, a member of JDEs
governing board, had admit-
ted to attacking the Soviet
diplomatic residence in River-
dale, a section of the Bronx,
and Soviet cultural events in
New York. One tear-gas
assault at Lincoln Center had
occurred during a perfor-
mance of the Soviet Mosiyev
dance company.
Cohen was scheduled to be
convicted in Brooklyn Federal
Court on October 29 and fac-
ed up to 20 years in prison
and $25,000 in fines.
