On this day, we are not only judged, but must also judge ourselves. We must ask ourselves whether we have been true to the values we treasure most as Jews. This question has special meaning to us, who are privileged to live in Israel. Here, the past, present and future of the Jewish -people are closely in- tertwined. Here, there is an awareness of heritage, of continuity, of shaping the future. Perhaps the most important of these values is peace — both with our neighbors and among ourselves. Accordingly, our primary goal in the com- ing year must be the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. On this issue, Israel is not divided, however different the suggested means of achieving it. The urgency of achieving peace — due as much to economic pressures as the demographic dangers and the threat of fundamentalism in the Arab world — requires all parties to the conflict to work for the advancement of this goal. To this end, we are determined to explore every avenue. We begin this New Year with a sense of optimism, knowing that some of our neighbors are coming more and more to realize the ad- vantages of peace, and the bit- ter impoverishment of war. This optimism has been fed by our peace agreement with Egypt, which has proven in- valuable despite its shortcom- ings; it has been encouraged by a positive attitude on the part of Jordan which, like Israel, sincerely seeks the path of negotiation. Today, as never before, the interna- tional atmosphere urges us to spare no effort in our search for peace in the region. We begin this New Year with no less a search for inter- nal peace and tranquility, working together to resolve our differences. Here, too, pa- tience and tolerance are essential in building a society based on pluralism and unity. You can help us to achieve this goal by coming to live with us, joining us in our homeland as full partners, enriching us with your hopes, Shimon Peres is Foreign Minister and Vice Premier of the State of Israel. your abilities, your know- ledge. Yet, with all these prob- lems, we are confident that the year ahead will be one of new initiatives, of advance- ment towards the achieve- ment of our most cherished goals. Following the success- ful battle with inflation, we must continue our pursuit of economic stability, economic growth and economic inde- pendence. Here, I believe, the answer lies in the develop- ment of advanced technology and science-based industry, as a challenge to our youth. Our thoughts and hearts go out to the Jews in the Soviet Union, to whom we send a message of solidarity, together with the hope that the gates will soon be opened and that we will be able to welcome you among us. We pray also for the freedom of our brethren still in Ethiopia, Iran and Syria, and for their speedy passage to our homeland. To the Jews of the free world, with whom we share the responsibility and satis- faction of the ingathering of our people and the develop- ment of our land, we express our deep appreciation for your efforts of the past year, and our hope that, through our joint- efforts, the New Year will be crowned with even greater success. i'mwimml NEWS 1•1•••••• ■ Saudi Arms Decision Denied Washington (JTA) — The State Department denied Tuesday that any decision has been made on a sale of arms to Saudi Arabia.
