Zev explains that opi-
nions differed over what the
sounds of the shofar should
resemble. Some claimed it
should be like a wailing
sound made by women when
they lament the tru'ah.
Others felt it was meant to be
like the sigh a person
repeatedly makes when he is
anxious (the shvarim). A
third group held it should be
a combination of both.
Therefore, all three
possibilities are heard in
every possible combination, a
total of 30 times.
It has become a custom to
blow 100 sounds: 30 between
- the morning and additional
services; 30 during musaf (the
additional prayer); 40 at the
end of musaf and at last, long-
sound the tekiah gedolah. The
101 sounds are comparable to
the 101 letters in the lament
uttered by Sisera's mother
(Judges 5), the last of which _
was a mother's sincere cry of
anguish. It is also the
numerical value of Michael,
Israel's protecting angel. The
tekiah gedolah at the end has
kabbalistic connotations.
Zev claims that a good pro-

mpter is as important as a
well-practiced blower. The
prompter calls out the order
of the shofar sounds. "He has
to be very understanding and
patient; he has to know what
he's doing." The prompter and
the blower are a team. They
practice together and are
checked out by the local rab-
bi before Rosh Hashanah.
According to halachah
(religious law), a congregation
should seek a blower who is
proficient in learning and in
the performance of good
deeds. A married man with
children is preferred, and the
one 'over 30.
If no such scholar is found
to blow the shofar, then at
least the prompter should be
well-iiersed: able to
distinguish between the dif-
ferent sounds of the shofar;
capable of knowing what to
do in case of error and
knowledgeable enough to ex-
amine the shofar's validity.
Josh relates a lovely tale
about choosing a proper
shofar blower. A rabbi in
Eastern Europe interviewed
three candidates for the posi-
tion. He asked each, "What

are your intentions when you
blow the shofar?" The first
man very piously announced,
"I endeavor to rend open the
gates of Heaven so that the
congregation will be im-
mediately forgiven for all
their transgressions." The se-
cond man boasted, "My
tekiyot are so effective that
every man, woman and child
will be moved to do penitence
immediately." A third can-
didate stood shyly at the side
and said nothing. After sogne
prompting, he admitted, "I'll
tell you the truth, Rabbi. I
have four daughters to marry
off and very little money for
their dowries. When I blow
the shofar I pray silently,
`Dear G-d in Heaven, I've
tried to fulfill your wish and
blown the shofar properly;
please fulfill my wish and
send suitable husbands for
my girls'." Naturally, he got
the job.
Josh has the same, simple _
intentions when he picks up
his instrument as the man in
the story. "It should go right,
it should go to the right place,
and it should fulfill the right
purpose," Josh says.
