Morristown (NJ) Memorial Hospital. Educating the public about IBD is of crucial importance to doctors, patients and their families. "I think there is a tremen- dous feeling in the lay public that this disease is caused by emotional factors," said Dr. Stephen Wang, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Mor- ristown (N.J.) Memorial Hospital: "Emotional stress "IBD affects Jews out of proportion to their percentage of the population." may precipitate it in a suscep- tible individual, but the emo- tional stress reason is pure nonsense." The main medications used to treat IBD are anti- inflammatory drugs, such as cortico-steroids and sulfasalazine. Although they bring relief from the symp- toms, they are not a cure. It is not uncommon for peo- ple to have IBD for some time before the illness is diagnos- ed. According to NFIC, two- thirds of all patients with Crohn's of the ileum will re- quire surgery. IBD can strike at any age, and most cases are diagnosed in people below the age of 30. NFIC estimates that as many as 200,000 children under age 16 suffer from IBD. According to the NFIC, growth failure is present in about 15 to 30 percent of children with Crohn's and ulcerative colitis when the onset is before puberty. For people suffering from ulcerative colitis, surgery to remove the entire colon and rectum is a permanent cure. That is required when non- surgical treatment, such as the anti-inflammatory drugs, does not work. Research is continuing to find the causes of IBD, as well as determining why Jewish people are more prone to it. According to the NFIC, much research is being conducted in the field of immunology, the study of the body's immune defense system, and microbiology, the study of microscopic organisms with the power to cause disease. Doctors are looking for in- fectious causes and finding a defect in the body's immune system, which seems to cause it to attack itself. Meantime, NFIC, now in its 20th year, is raising money for research and cures. Copyright 1987, JTA, Inc. Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year. Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year.
