Sagal. "My parents warned
me about show business. I
didn't really like the idea of
being an actress. I don't like
all that film starting and
stopping."
The former background
singer for Bob Dylan and
Olivia Newton"-John has
started critics' adrenalin flow-
ing with some of her work.
She won acclaim for her part
in Backstreet, a rock musical
in Los Angeles. For her per-
formance as the tough-as-
nails Jo in the 1985 short-
lived Mary Tyler Moore sit-
com, she earned ever-so-sweet
accolades, including the
kudos from star Moore that
"Katey is one of those rare
people who needs to see, feel
or touch something only a few
times to know it entirely."
Sagal was touched by Jo. "I
loved her," says Sagal. "She
was part of me, smart-alecky,
hip."
Sagal also has been hip to
the pain Jo felt as an outsider,
a woman peeking into life. "I
grew up around the Palis-
ades," she says. "There
everyone was blue-eyed,
blonde and here I was, this
big ethnic — Jewish — girl.
"I was different, a social
outcast. I was very insecure
as a kid. I didn't look like the
other kids. I don't know if
they excluded me, or I exclud-
ed myself. I never quite fit."
But the square peg found
her hole by understanding
her distinctiveness. "When I
realized I was unique, I knew
then it was okay.'
But the talk of her being
different in high school was
no different that the talk she
heard in Hollywood years
later. "Five years ago, I was
told I'd never work in televi-
sion," she says. "I was told I
was too offbeat, odd, that I
wouldn't be on Dallas or

Dynasty."

She wasn't. But Katey
Sagal has maintained her
own family dynasty of per-
formers with her work as the
offbeat Jo and off-the-wall
Peggy.
The sounds of success are
great, says Sagal. But give
her the symphony of a rock
band jammin. "I had my own
band — we came inches from
a record deal."
Fill her platter with some
hard-driving music and she'll
lap it up. "All my friends are
mainly rock 'n roll people,"
she says. "You know, I learn-
ed a lot from working with
Bette Midler, especially about
working hard," she says with
more than just a hint of ad-
miration in her voice.
"Bette has a healthy work
ethic. I have enormous respect
for her. I know how to work
long hours and be the best."
