"If we had boycotted
Miami," Mrs. Maltzer ex-
plained, "it would have caus-
ed a terrible break in
Catholic-Jewish relations. In-
stead, the dialogue between
Jews and Catholics has been
lifted to a much higher level
within the Vatican."
Asked if the sessions will
eliminate future meetings
between the Pope and
Waldheim, an accused Nazi,
Mrs. Maltzer assured The
Jewish News that they would
not. "Austria is a Catholic
state and Waldheim is the
head of Austria. The Pope has
already announced that he
will visit Austria. But the im-
portant thing is that now the
entire Catholic Church will
have an official document on
the Holocaust.
"We can't be stuck on a
crack," she said. "We have to
move forward, and the
meeting in Rome was a step
forward. It alsopreserved the
dignity of the Jewish people."
Mrs. Maltzer was not sur-
prised by the Pope's Miami
statement on the need for a
Palestinian homeland — "He

being said by some Jewish
groups" — but now the Pope
talks of Israel and not just the
Jewish people.
"There's a great deal of
naivete in what some of our
people expected" from the
meetings with the Pope, Mrs.
Maltzer believes. "But we are
on agood footing with the
Catholic Church now. Just
compare the last 20 years to
the preceding 2,000.
"I'm willing to say that the
glass is more than half full,
rather than to say that it is
half empty."
