It should not be out of the question for mutual respect and even spiritual fructification to take the place of fanaticism and violence. In this problem, as in so much else, Israel becomes the proving ground for the evolution of Jewish history. It is not a cloudless sky that Israel faces in its fortieth year, but it confronts its pro- blems with a sense of having proved its capacity to carry out sometimes inconceivably difficult objectives. Clearly, peace with our neighbors is one such great objective, still far from realization, except for the heartening instance of Egypt. Yet even in this field there is movement now and there is hope. There is hope, as well, for increased Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union, and, with increased worldwide understanding of the significance of Jewish educa- tion,- there is hope for a significant change in .the spiritual and cultural life of Diaspora Jewry. The inroads which have been made into the ranks of the Jewish peo- ple by assimilation have reached very dangerous pro- portions, and efforts must be redoubled to strengthen Jewish education everywhere and the Jewish identification of -youth in the schools and on the campuses. An at- President Chaim Herzog: History and future. mosphere must be created in which the idea of a youth's settling in Israel becomes natural and self-understood. For Israel presents the greatest and the most rewar- ding of challenges to Jewish youth. How better can we enter this fortieth year, 5748, than by recalling the great words of Ezekiel, written in Babylo- nian exile: "Thus says the Lord God: Behold I will take the children of Israel from among the nations . . . and will gather them on every side and bring them into their own land. And I will make them one nation in the land." And now on the eve of 5748 I send from Jerusalem to all of you the blessing of k'tiva v'hatima tova. John XXIII Continued from Page 6 " the relation of his Church to the Jewish peple that caused so much of their suffering? It is a matter of deep distress that the Pontiff would tour the site of a former Nazi death camp and fail to men- tion most of its victims were Jews; that his Eminence would receive as honored guests former Nazi officer Kurt Waldheim and terrorist leader Yassir Arafat. The current Pope should take to heart the unique prayer offered in 1963 by his recent predecessor, Pope John XXIII: "We are conscious today that many centuries of blind- ness have clouded our eyes to that we can no longer either see the beauty of Thy chosen people or recognize in their faces the features of our privileged brethren. We realize that the mark of Cain stands upon our foreheads. Across the centuries our brother Abel has lain in blood which we caused by forgetting Thy love. Forgive for the curse we falsely attached to their name as Jews. Forgive us for crucifying Thee a second time in their flesh. For we know not what we did."
