Detroiters Go
To Bond Event

Israel will receive from the
United States additional
military and economic aid for
fiscal years 1988 and 1989 as
compensation for giving up
the production of the Lavi
fighter bomber, it was
reported by Douglas A.
Schubot, chairman of the
Metro Detroit Committee for
State of Israel Bonds, who
participated in a four-day
Israel Bond North American
Leadership Conference at the
Queen Elizabeth Hotel in
Montreal, Canada, last week.
Other local conference par-
ticipants were Metro
Detroiters David B.
Hermelin, international cam-
paign chairman and chair-
man of the Conference; his
wife, Doreen; Jonathan D.
Brateman; Dr. Robert
Brateman; Ellen Hechler; D.
Dan and Betty Kahn; Richard
Partrich; Heidi Press; Ber-
nard and Barbara Stollman;
Mrs. Emma L. Schaver;
Sydell Schubot; Jay and San-
dy Stark; Donald and Dottie
Wagner; Lawrence and An-
drea Wolfe; and Leo and
Marian Goldner of Toledo,
Ohio. They were among the
500 Jewish leaders from 55
North American com-
munities who took part in the
Conference sessions.
Israel Finance Minister
Moshe Nissim and Israel Am-
bassador to the UN Benjamin
Netanyahu were among the
major speakers at the four-
day conference.

To Gather

The Israel Numismatic
Society of Michigan will hold
its next meeting at 8 p.m.
Tuesday at the Jewish Com-
munity Center's Jimmy Pren-
tis Morris Branch.
Refreshments will be served.
The nominating committee
has proposed the following
candidates to serve as officers
in 1988. The election will
take place at the October
meeting.
President, Leo Silber; vice
president, escrow, Kay Briggs;
vice president, publici-
ty/membership, Milt Shapiro;
recording secretary, Peggy
Shafir; treasurer, Kitty
Charms; and corresponding
secretary, Phil Charms.
The director slate will be
carried over from 1987. Addi-
tional nominations may be
made from the floor in behalf
of any member desiring to be
a candidate.

The making of cloisonne first started in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368
AD). The first step is the moulding of the body out of copper. When the
article is well shaped a filigree is soldered onto the base. This step
requires great core and high creativeness. Copper wires are fixed on
the body according to the artists own rich experiences, imagination
and oesthetical views. A mixture of minerals and ores are applied,
and the piece is fired to secure the wire permanently. Then a process
called enameling is begun. This requires many applications of
enamels and then firing. Each time the piece is fired the enamel
shrinks and shrinks and requires an additional application of enamel
and then again firing until all of the recesses created by the wire are
completely filled. The piece then requires 2 separate types of
polishing and gilding. Flux is applied to prevent any rust from
entering metals. Finally electroplating and polishing completes this
magnificent piece of artistry. Each piece distinct.

Don't Let Scoliosis Throw
You A Postural Curve

Scoliosis, sclerosis and silicosis. With the similarity in names, one might
assume there was a similarity in conditions.
The plain fact is that the conditions are worlds apart.
Silicosis, according to the dictionary, is a fibrosis of the lungs caused
by long-term inhalation of silica dust and resulting in shortness of breath.
Sclerosis is a-thickening or hardening of a body part, such as an artery.
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine.
Although the spine normally curves in and out from front to back,
it is neither natural nor healthful for it to curve laterally. or from side to side.
When the spine curves unnaturally, the spinal segments pinch the
nerves which pass between them on their way from
the spinal cord to the various parts of the body This
pinched nerve condition reduces the flow of nerve
energy and causes improper bodily function.
While scoliosis begins to appear in childhood, and
is eight times more common among girls than in boys,
it may not appear until the early teens or even later.
Of course, the bad posture habits of teenagers
don't help the condition and often make it hard to
recognize. A child may just assume poor posture
through laziness, but a stooped shoulder or raised hip

may indicate that scoliosis is present.
There are some simple tests which anyone can use to check for the
possibility of scoliosis:
1. When standing erect, both shoulders should normally be on the
some level. 2. The hem on a girl's or woman's skirt should hong straight.
not higher on one side. One shoe should not wear out foster than its
mate, especially along the edge.
Any of these warning signs can have a variety of causes other than
scoliosis. But the possibility of scoliosis should not be overlooked. If you
spot one of these telltale signs on yourself or your child, you should ar-
range for o Chiropractic spinal examination as soon as possible.
Remember, abnormal curvature of the spine can result in serious health
problems through nerve interference.
Throwing a curve may be okay on the baseball diamond, but it's
definitely a foul play when someone's health is concerned.
