all these tapes will be for
future biographers and
historians."
My answer: "How much of
what is on those tapes can
some researcher believe?"
Reply: "But the researcher
can and of course should
check every single 'fact'
recorded on the tape."
Rebuttal: "But if, let's say,
a 25-year embargo has been
placed on a tape, those who
might be able to confirm or
deny the so-called facts may
all be dead and verification
might be next to impossible,
so the distortions or outright
falsifications are likely to be
accepted."
So . . . let's have more and
more tapes, more and more
oral histories, but let future
historians beware. All is not
fact because someone says so
on a piece of tape. ❑

Bremen Elects
Neo-Nazi

Bonn (JTA) — A candidate
of a neo-Nazi party won a seat
in the parliament of the
federal state of Bremen in
northern Germany Sunday, to
the surprise and consterna-
tion of liberals and conser-
vatives alike.
Hans Alterman, a right-
wing extremist, represented
he Deutsche Volksunion
(DVU), a party headed by neo-
Nazi Gerhard Frey. Frey
published the Munich-based
weekly National Zeitung
which claims to have "scien-
tific" proof that the Holocaust
was a fiction and the gas
chambers "Zionist propagan-
da."
Immediately after Sunday's
election, representatives of all
factions in the Buergerschft
(state parliament) held a joint
press conference at which
they vowed to stand firm
against Alterman's ideas.

Holocaust
Questioned

Paris (JTA) — French Jewry
is outraged and alarmed by
right-wing leader Jean Marie
Le Pen's claim in a national-
ly broadcast radio interview
Sunday night that the
Holocaust, if it indeed occur-
red, has been exaggerated
and in any event was only a
footnote to history.
Le Pen, who spoke on Radio
Luxembourg, heads the ex-
treme right-wing National
Front.
