Lewinsky, 69, is not a favorite among the Diaspora leadership who have been calling for reforms within the Agency. Though he is ex- perienced and regarded as bright, Lewinsky represents the "old school" because he comes from within the very system that critics contend needs an overhaul. He has a strong power base within the Labor party. A number of American Jewish leaders are unhappy with the choice of Lewinsky but have neither the will to fight him nor a specific issue to wage a fight over. "There is a certain amount of resigna- tion over the choice of Lewin- sky," says one American Jewish leader. Two younger Israelis whose names have often been men- tioned for the top executive post are Benjamin Netan- yahu, the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, and Ehud Olmert, a Likud member of the Knesset. Both men are young, dynamic, ar- ticulate in English and at- tractive to American Jewish officials. But it seems that neither is interested in the position unless they are assured that there will be no opposition to them. "They aren't willing to fight for the job and it would be too crushing to their careers if they ran, and lost," noted an Israeli insider, who added that some officials are wary of offering the post to a politi- cian who may use it as a career stepping stone.
