FIGHT THE BIG "F"... FURNITURE FADING SOLAR SALES, INC. 537-7900 Authorized Dealer/Applicator Sun Control Products Bloom pointed out two other "ifs" — the oppressive heat and humidity of the New Delhi summer and the grass courts. Asked if he would play Davis Cup again, Mansdorf said, "I cannot answer that." His plans include a bit of rest in Israel followed by tour- nament play in Europe and then again in the U.S. His goal is to return to the consis- tent play that characterized the beginning of 1987. Bloom had a similar hope. "Well, I want to get more con- sistent," he said. "I'd like to get up to the top 100 in a year from now, by the time I get out of the army. From then, I make the next step. The goal is to get as high as I could." Bloom, one of the few active-duty soldiers on the in- ternational tennis tour, had no complaints about his military hitch, which will last another 14 months "I'm play- ing quite a lot for a guy in the army," he said. "I like to play many matches because it's best for me. I need to keep my competitive fire. That's why I've been playing 22 tour- naments in the last year. I'm hanging in there. I'm at the door to the big time." He said the army also has allowed him practice time. "When I'm at home I have to go every day to the army from 8 a.m. to noon and I can prac- tice in the afternoons," he said. He and Mansdorf agreed their doubles team had the potential for success despite the absence of a tall man with a booming serve. Mansdorf is 5'8", 140 pounds. Bloom is almost 5'8" and weighs 150. "It's a little tougher," said Mansdorf. "But we cover the court well enough." Glickstein had returned to Israel by the time the main draw of the U.S. Open began, but Bloom discussed his re- cent on-court troubles. "He had a few good years, three or four years," Bloom said, but has entered "a bad period" in which former easy opponents beat him. "It's very tough to get out of it. You lose, your confidence goes, sometimes it can roll like a snowball. I think he made a few mistakes by choosing to play only the big tournaments" rather than building his record in smaller ones. Now Glickstein "always has to beat good players to qualify" for tournaments, Bloom added. WARNING THESE PREMISES PROTECTED BY Come To Aladdin.
