JCCouncil Starting
Washington Campaign
With the impending sum-
mit meeting between Presi-
dent Ronald Reagan and
Soviet General Secretary
Mikhail Gorbachev, Jeannie
Weiner, chairman of the
Soviet Jewry Committee of
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil, and Rabbi Richard C.
Hertz, Council vice president,
are spearheading a mobiliza-
tion effort encouraging
Michigan Jews to be in
Washington during the sum-
mit in a show of solidarity
with Soviet Jews. Thousands
are expected to participate in
a massive demonstration.
Members of the Council's
Soviet Jewry Committee, in-
cluding several who have
traveled to the Soviet Union,
are available to speak to
Council's 300 member
organizations and outstate
Michigan communities. They
will speak on the critical
nature of a large Jewish
presence in Washington dur-
ing the summit and on the
continued plight of Soviet
Jewry, which is expected to be
on the agenda of any meeting
between Reagan and
Gorbachev.
Rabbis of more than 30
Detroit area congregations
will be asking their members

to participate in the
Washington rally.
Thousands of forms asking
for commitments to travel to
Washington will be
distributed during the corn-
ing month. Group travel
plans are being coordinated
by the Jewish Community
Council's Soviet Jewry
Committee.
According to Weiner, "It is
important that large
numbers of people from across
the United States — Jews,
Christians, rabbis, college
students, businessmen,
housewives — demonstrate in
Washington on behalf of
human rights. The possibili-
ty exists that if an agreement
is made between Gorbachev
and Reagan at the summit,
the doors allowing Soviet
Jews out may abruptly close.
We must demonstrate that
the issue of human rights is
crucial to the lives of 400,000
Soviet Jews who wish to
leave, regardless of the out-
come of any other Summit
discussions."
Those wishing to assist in
the summit mobilization or to
be notified of Washington
travel plans should contact
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil office, 962-1880.

presidents under Berman
were Nancy Leavitt of
