Koch

peace to the region. Koch
seeks what he calls a middle-
of-the-road solution to "the
most important political issue
in the western hemisphere."
Koch pledged his full sup-
port to the Arias peace plan .
Koch was unwilling to
listen to activist groups who
sympathize with the San-
danista government in
Nicaragua. And he dealt
biting words to audience
members who, during a ques-
tion and answer period,
pleaded with him to look
critically at the attrocities of
Nicaragua's U.S.-backed Con-
tra rebels.
Following his speech,
Koch responded to questions
ranging from Israel's ter-
ritories to the plight of the
New York homeless —
demonstrating himself as a
man never short of opinions.
"There's nothing wrong
with having opinions,"
defended Koch. "Most in-
telligent people do."
Many of the students who
attended the Sunday night
forum criticized Koch's speech
and his choice of subject
matter.
"I was disappointed," said
Beth Bernhaut, a U-M senior
history major. "I was expec-
ting him to talk about Jews in
the political scene."
But others who attended
the Sunday-Monday con-
ference praised Koch as the
most exciting of speakers.
"Because he's a Jew and a
politician, whatever subject
he brings up automatically
pertains to the symposium,"
said Jeff Susskind, a
sophomore economics major.
The criticism did not
seem to bother Koch.
"When I'm here, I run the
(show)," Koch said, cutting off
in audience member who
said the mayor's speech was
not particularly useful. But
organizers of the U-M forum
defended Koch's style. "It was
a quintessentially Jewish
style," said U-M Professor Zvi
Gitelman, who organized the
forum. "It had style, wit,
repartee and bon mot. As
much in style as in substance,
he represented a Jewish
style?'
Koch insisted that his
decision to speak on
Nicaragua was not an at-
tempt to avoid the topic of his
Judaism. "I'm very proud to
be a Jew," he said. "I don't
think there's a person in New
York who doesn't know I'm a
Jew — not one."
Then there were those
who were not the least sur-
prised by Koch's rough,
vociferous style. "Provocative
and controversial as usual,"
grinned U-M President
Harold Shapiro.
