worries us is not the political

expressions," says Bein, "but
this dangerous anti-Jewish
language. One of the major
lessons for the Jewish people
is the demonic power of the
tongue. The Nazis," he con-
tinues, "used the terminology
of insects against the Jews.
The natural conclusion: ex-
termination."
The same conclusion, says
Bein, can be drawn by UN
delegates who continually
hear Israel referred to not as
a country, but as "the Zionist
entity." Such language "vir-
tually legitimizes the war
Iran has been continually
calling for," Bein argues.
The highpoint for anti-
Semitica at the UN was 1985.
Since then, vigorous efforts by
American delegates have
yielded a measurable re-
straint. But Jacobson insists,
"If we are to look to the day
when the UN fulfills its pur-
ported function, not only
American delegates but those
of other western nations must
speak out." Asked how this
could come about, Jacobson
answers, "Simple. We keep
the issue alive." ❑

Shamir Gives
Nir The Boot

Jerusalem (JTA) — Amiram
Nir, the Israeli who alleged-
ly set up the sale of U.S. arms
to Iran and arranged diver-
sion of the proceeds to the
Nicaraguan rebels known as
Contras, was fired last week
as Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir's advisor on counter-
terrorism, Israel Radio
reported.
According to Israel Radio,
his dismissal and that of
several other officials was
part of an agreement signed
when Shamir took over the of-
fice of Prime Minister under
the Labor-Likud rotation of
power agreement last Oc-
tober. The Iran-Contra arms
sales scandal broke the fol-
lowing month.
U.S. reports said Nir travell-
ed to Teheran to arrange for
the sale of American-manu-
factured arms to Iran. Lt. Col.
Oliver North, the former aide
to then National Security Ad-
viser Adm. John Poindexter,
testified before the Senate-
House joint committee that
Nir initiated the transfer of
funds from the arms sale to
the Contras.
