Holiday Dilemma

University, 32,000 students,
1,800 Jewish students:
"This year I am coming
home on Yom Kippur because
it is on the weekend. Last
year I went to services and a
dinner at Hillel on the holi-
day. A lot of kids went home
and everyone who stays here
goes to services together.
"But to me, the holiday
means being with my family,
and if I'm at school I just do
what I normally do. I've never
had a problem with my pro-
fessors and I think you can
get excused from tests."

"The first year at
Michigan I stayed
at school for the
holidays because I
was too nervous to
miss, but after
that I came home
to be with my
family." James

18,000 students, 5,000 Jewish
students:
"Last year I went home for
Rosh Hashanah and went to
services at Hillel on Yom Kip-
pur. This year I'm a second
year law student and because
of time restraints I have to
stay at school and write my
journal for the Law Review. I
don't have time to fly back
and forth. It will be the first
time I won't be spending the
high holidays with my fami-
ly and I'm not happy about it.
"One of my Jewish pro-
fessors encouraged us to go to
shul. He said, 'Take time out
from your work and get your
priorities straight.
Remember, your final grade
comes from God? "
