The horrible past is a never- to-be-forgotten nightmare .. . and the ensuing years of suc- cess by this couple is the dream they wondered would ever come true. One of the main credos at Irving's Restaurant- Delicatessen . . . which celebrates its second anniver- sary at La Mirage Mall on Northwestern north of 12 Mile, has been to promote a comfort of happiness for others . . . in fulfillment of a promise made many years ago when reality was hard to believe ever existed. Ater Rose and Irving met in a displaced persons camp following the war, they were wed .-. . and came to America . . . for the beginning of their promise. The couple opened Irving's Restaurant & Delicatesen on Yeman's in Hamtramck .. . where Rose became well- noted for her home cooking of Jewish traditional foods .. . Businesspersons from everywhere knew about Irv- ing's and for 20 years it was a standout, open only Monday thru Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. They were more than ready for a seven-day-a-week opera- tion with longer hours .. . and moved to spend ten years serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at their next locale on Greenfield . . . Had Rose and Irving remained there, September would also have been an anniversary . . . number 11. The La Mirage operation of Irving's continues to retain that "old world" flavor of homemade Jewish tradition . . . as Rose makes her own stuffed cabbage, gefilte fish, pickled trout, baked short ribs, roast tongue, apple strudel, matzo balls, kreplach and a huge assortment of delicious food that makes the mouths of Jewish home cook- ing lovers drool in savory anticipation. Her knishes have been voted number one by a local magazine and people come from everywhere for Rose's beef flanken . . . Every once in a while, she'll make good old- fashioned bean and barley cholent for one day only .. . . and unlike others who sometimes may have it (very few), she never runs out .. . cooking in the old school of making more than is needed. The fish at Irving's is fresh . . . whitefish, trout, etc. . . . and there's no such thing as processed or packaged meat . . . Even hamburger or meat loaf is ground by hand . . . and veal is cut by hand. Everything . . . even the dressings (except Wishbone Italian) is homemade . . . in- cluding the potato salad and cole slaw. Seating at the La Mirage location is for 135 in booths and at tables, plus a counter with six seats . . . amidst an atmosphere of contemporary design in airiness surrounded by glass windows looking out into the mall . . . and a decor setting of mauves, grays, beiges and brown tones. Irving's isn't the same restaurant-delicatessen peo- ple have taken for granted .. . It has become a highly diver- sified one, also . . . run by daughter Carol Hoptman .. . while Rose weaves her 33 years of kitchen magic. It now has a highly- appreciated lunch route with Abe Kushner and Sam Siegel delivering freshly-made food to offices . . . Catering inside and outside, with the same Jewish traditional foods, has become very big at Irving's for weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. . . . A recent outside bar- b-q was catered by Irving's for four consecutive days . . . and people like Florine Mark- Ross, head of Weight Wat- chers International hereabouts, call on this 'popular restaurant many times to cater affairs . . . Out- side catering also takes in a number of large corporations, including some biggie utility companies . . . Recent Detroit Edison breakfast was catered for 250 people. Few places exist with both delicatessen and stir-fried specialties . . . Both can be gotten at Irving's . . . plus 60 homemade salads . . . And with the country on a heavy health kick, Irving's is big with low-cal and wholesome foods . . . and an American Heart Association Creative Cuisine Approved Menu sec- tor is within Irving's bill of fare. Full dinners hover around the $5 mark on weekly specials and it is one of the few restaurants serving fresh turkey cut from the bird, not frozen breast . . . Rose and her
