Mayor Koch will open the 1987 Shanik-Fleischer Forum with an assessment of ethnic politics in an urban setting at 7:30 p.m. in Rackham Lecture Hall. All events are free and open to the public. The forum will continue Tuesday with a symposium on "Jewish Political Ideas and Institutions" during the day and a 7:30 p.m. colloquium on "Jews in American Politics." The Shanik-Fleischer Forum was established last year by the U-M College of Literature, Science and the Arts and the Program in Judaic Studies. The events are co-sponsored by the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. The Tuesday symposium on Jewish political ideas and in- stitutions will open at 9 a.m. in the fourth-floor Rackham Assembly Hall with a look at the medieval period. Speaker Robert Chazan of New York University and commentator Diane Owen Hughes of U-M will lead the discussion. Speaking at 10:30 a.m. on Jewish political ideas and in- stitutions in the ancient period will be Stuart Cohen, Bar-Ilan University, and Gerald Blidstein, Ben-Gurion University. Born in Palestine in 1943, Rabinovich comes from a family active in political and civic affairs. His father was editorial director of the Israel daily Maariv; his uncle Aharon Yariv, is a distinguished career officer in the Israel Defense Forces and a special advisor to the Prime Minister. Rabinovich will be in the United States to attend an in- ternational conference on the Middle East at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. He will give two lectures here, at WSU and at Cong. Shaarey Zedek under the auspices of the newly established Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University. His topics are: "The Six-Day War Twenty Years Later" to be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at 226 Manoogian Hall, W.S.U. and "The Prospects for Peace in the Middle East: An Historical Perspective' at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shaarey Zedek. Hillel Center Classes Begin Registration for courses at the University of Michigan Hillel's Jewish Learning Center will take place from Monday through Sept. 18. The JLC offers classes open to the entire community on subjects ranging from Bible and basic Judaism to Israeli folk dancing, Yiddish and Hebrew. Classes begin Sept. 21.
