Hunters Square - Loehmanns

Farmington Hills

1985, and to a greater ex-
tent in 1986, the basic, five-
pocket jean surged in sales and
literally dominated the jeans
market. Now when jeans manu-
facturers discuss jeans, fashion
is not silhouettes but color and
fabric treatments as well.
Changes in silhouettes have
been subtle and barely discern-
able. Jeans are looser fitting.
Some are big and baggy with
lots of pleats and gathers. There
are high-waisted jeans that can
be belted and suspendered.
There are low rise jeans. There
are lots of different yoke
treatments.
Jackets are cropped or over-
sized. Reversible items add
value and versatility. There's lots
of quilting. Skirts are important
and lengths range from 19 inch-
es to 32 inches, the newer
looks tend to be real short and
full. Duster coats are still import-
ant. There are trouser-style
jeans with pleats at the waist
and cuffs at the bottom. Watch
for stretch denim and corduroy
to be a force moving into '88.
They are already talking about
the return of the cigarette jean.
The '50's went down in history
as the decade that gave jeans
a bad name. Tough guys wore
black leather jackets, motorcycle
boots, and jeans. Now that
jeans have achieved their
fashion status, "tough" is chic
and black is back. Strong in
Europe for several seasons now,
black has returned with a ven-
geance. There are frosted
blacks, soft stonewashed char-
coals, muddy black overdyes
(black over another color) and
the very intense black overdyed
on black that gives denim a
very dressed-up look.
