using black and white photo-
graphs. We are just now starting
a series of studies using color
photographs,"
Thus, Cunningham's cross-
cultural experiment, which in-
cluded black and Oriental wo-
men, demonstrates that there is
strong agreement on what con-
stitutes an attractive female face,
although each culture may vary
on the face's details. "Remem-
ber when you saw the pictures
in magazines of native women
with scars on their faces, with
their teeth filed to points, and
the captions said these were
considered beautiful women?"
he asks. 'Well, it turns out these
weren't done for the sake of
beauty — they were really sta-
tus symbols. You've got two dif-
ferent things here — attractive-
ness and status judgments."
Cunningham also wants to
make it clear that, as he puts it,
"there are trade-offs in life." The
way attractive people are per-
ceived may be a "self-fulfilling
prophecy. If you are considered
attractive, people treat you bet-
ter and you may indeed devel-
op greater social skills," he says.
"People rate the physically at-
tractive as bright, personable
and friendly, but they are also
suspicious of the physically at-
tractive, who are seen as vain
and as a bit unstable. For ex-
ample, the physically attractive
are thought to be more likely to
have an affair or to get a div-
orce."
There is, Cunningham points
out, "a bottom line" to attrac-
tiveness. "Although there is a
basis for physical beauty, that is
not the only basis people use
for choosing a mate. And nowa-
days," he adds, "physical ap-
pearance can easily be
changed."
