orduroy is a true American
classic ...one that evokes
fond memories of days gone
by. Ask Grandpa about those
wonderful corduroy knickers
that he wore to school that
whistled when he walked!
Corduroy has been absent
from the fashion mainstream for
some time. But that's about to
change. Corduroy is taking on
new importance with the return
to more traditional dressing.
There seems to be a trend
away from the basic 14 wales
toward wider, plushier 8 wales
and thick 'n thin combinations
or even to the super soft 21 rib
corduroy that was an important
shirting fabric back in the '50's.
There's a wide range of new
colors (including indigo) that are
all being softened by washing
wherever possible. Prints are im-
portant and range from neat
geometrics and the newest "no-
print" prints that give the illusion
of textures like rich multi-colored
wool tweeds. Winter white is a
refreshing contrast to the more
somber dark fall colors. Cor-
duroy is also a fabric that mixes
well with leather, canvas and
