Men probably have more op- tions for completely different looks when purchasing a top- coat this season. Retailers are showing dressy chesterfields and Zippered balmacaans (loose, single breasted over- coats with raglan sleeves). The classic tan shearing coat is be- ing shown over a sport coat or suit for city wear and Fer- ragamo's new knee length tan shearing shown as a topcoat. L'Uomo Vogue, for instance, shows a black, ankle length gabardine duster by Christian Kent with buttoned back vent and subtle oversizd shoulders. Wool solids and herringbones, shetlands, cashmeres, and even velours are part of this season's choices. "I expect to sell more over- coats and topcoats this season," explains Kosins. "Men are beginning to bypass the tradi- tional raincoat worn regardless of season. Now they can opt for the oversize coat, one that has a big easy look, or for a more fitted garment." Kosins states that black is the first choice color for coats this season, and camel the second choice color. John Kent and Osmun stores also plan on selling more top- coats says Lori Lapides, spokesperson for the stores located throughout the tri- county area. 'We're seeing more people leaning toward the more traditional style of clothing and the use of natural fabrics. They seem to be concentrating on developing a basic wardrobe and building on that rather than buying something that's in this year and out the next. Cash- mere and wool and wool blends are the more popular choices for this season." The traditional raincoat re- mains prevalent with the English Burberry influence setting the pace.
