Bat Mitzvah
Celebrated
Shannon Beth Wayman
recently twinned the obser-
vance of her bat mitzvah with
Irina Fuksshimov, daughter
of Konstantin and Sofia
Fuksshimov of Kharkov,
Ukrainian SSR, USSR, at
Cong. Beth Shalom.
Fuksshimov, an engineer,
and his wife lost their jobs
after applying for permission
to emigrate to Israel.
Fuksshimov is an engineer
and his wife is a music
teacher. Her sister left the
Soviet Union 12 years ago.
She would like to be reunited
with her sister, but the
refusal of the Fuksshimov's
application was based on "in-
sufficient kinship." The
reason given was that a mar-
ried sister is no longer a
sister. Thus she is considered
not to have close relatives in
Israel * and therefore would
have no reason to be allowed
to go there.
Mrs. Fuksshimov has not
seen her sister Ekaterina
since April 1973 when she
emigrated to Israel. Com-
munication between them
has been erratic since their
letters do not always reach
their destinations.
Fuksshimov has been an,ac-
tive participant in the Jewish
movement through scientific
seminars, university, actions
of public protest and by
organizing the refusenik com-
munity in Kharkov. He was
an active participant in the
collective hunger strike.
Mrs. Fuksshimov's parents
are very ill. The only source
of income is odd jobs, mostly
trips to the Siberian pipeline
sites for a couple of months a
year. The Fuksshimovs speak
English.
Two To Share
Bnai Mitzvah
Daniel Hamburger, son of
Robert Hamburger and Mer-
rill Saidman, and Matthew
Matasar, son of Kenneth and
Judith Matasar, will share
their b'nai mitzvah
ceremonies at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek with Roma Avadiaiev,
son of Kiin and Roza
Avadiaiev.
The Avadiaiev family is
among the Tat or "mountain"
Jews who live in the Caspian
seaport of Derbent. The
Avadiaievs are separated
from Kiin's sister who left for
Israel more than nine years
ago.
The family was first refus-
ed exit visas in 1975. Since
that time a daughter, Avshar,
was born in 1976 and twins,
Yudit and Itshak, were born
in 1983.
