James R. Lyons at its opening fall meeting Sept. 15 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Had- assah National Vice Presi- dent Carmela Kalmanson will make the presentation. Rev. Lyons, who is the founder-director of the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies in Southfield, is internationally known for his numerous literary contributions and dialogues on the subject of the Christian churches during the Holocaust. He focused on that topic as director of the Walker and Gertrude Cisler Library at Wayne State University and also directed WSU's Office of Religious Affairs. A Near East scholar, Rev. Lyons is a member of the ex- ecutive committee of the Na- tional Christian Leadership Conference for Israel. He has conducted seminars on Jewish-Christian relations all over the world, and published works on the subject in the Congregationalist, Wayne State University Press, and for the National Academy of Science. He is also a member of the advisory board, Inter- national Center for Holocaust Studies of the Anti- Defamation League. Before founding the Ecumenical Institute, Rev. Lyons was spiritual leader of the Pine Hill Congregational Church in West Bloomfield for 27 years. Among the local honors previously bestowed upon him are: the Righteous Gentile Award of Shaarit Haplaytah of Metropolitan Detroit, the Chautauqua Society Award for Outstan- ding Achievement in Inter- religious Affairs by the Brotherhood of Temple Beth El in Birmingham, and Cong. Shaarey Zedek Men's Club Temple Israel Sisterhood will present Kenneth Libo following a noon luncheon at the temple on Sept. 14. Libo's topic will be "Westward Oy: Pioneer Jewish Men and Women Out West" based on material from his latest book, We Lived There Too. Dr. Libo is the curator of historical exhibitions for the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. Libo was the co- author with Irving Howe of Kenneth Libo World of Our Fathers, How We Lived, and most recently We Lived There Too. Libo is a Dartmouth graduate with a Ph.D. Degree from City University of New York, and recipient of a National Book Award Certificate. Chairmen of the luncheon are Gayle Hirsch and Laurie Blinder.
