That struck me as the most interesting and pro- bably the most poignant paradox of all. "The Jewish community of Morocco, despite all of its fear of physical depression has a vitality of Jewish life that I envy," he said. "It's phenomenal. We spoke to kids in schools, and they all indicated that they were mov-. ing out of the country. I ask- ed them in Hebrew, in first and second grades, and they all said they were destined for some other place." Schlussel said the com- parison proved to be "both frightening and enlightening at the same time." Schussel was sent by the UJA to evaluate the use of Allied Jewish Campaign funds as they are divided bet- ween the United Israel Ap- peal and the JDC overseas component. "I was singular- ly impresseed with the JDC and how it parceled out its resources and got an effective return for the investment that the American Jewish community makes. "I think that the people in this country can feel comfor- table knowing that the dollar is being allocated to the JDC as evident by my trip to Morocco as well as Larry's. We really should be proud of what the JDC is doing. They're keeping Jewish life going, and that's one of the most important factors of all." ❑ ONNSVMSOMEMESSMO - AMMMOMMMME250= Israeli Students Create Chair for MDA Patients Straight bets in the Daily 3 Game just got even better. Jerusalem — At the request of several hospitals in Israel (Alyn, Beit Levenstein and Tel Hashomer), Boys Town Jerusalem was asked to charge its students with the development of a measuring chair for muscular dystrophy patients. Sufferers of muscular atrophy are confined to wheelchairs which must con- form to the patient's physical dimensions. Wheelchairs must be changed periodically, about every 10 months, as the patient's body changes in response to the progress of the disease and treatment. The correct dimensions of the wheelchair are critical to the patient's well-being. Presently, attaining the measurements is done by a physiotherapist using a tape measure and/or a ruler. Since graduates of Boys Town Jerusalem's College of Applied Engineering must present original projects, in addition to passing their writ- ten examinations, in order to earn an Associate Engineer degree from Israel's Ministry of Education, two students from the mechanical engineering faculty under- took this challenge. The goal of the project was to construct a prototype wheelchair equipped with measuring devices of various kinds which could be adjusted easily, providing accurate readings. The wheelchair designed has 16 such measuring devices giving information on the width, length and breadth of the seat and back, the angle of the back, height of the head rest and arm rests. For the technician there is lit- tle left to do but to fill in the order form for the new wheelchair. The two Boys Town - students who developed the measuring chair are Av- shalom Radi and Uri Dehari. East Berlin Gets Its Own Rabbi New York (jTA) — For the first time in almost a quarter century, the small Jewish community in East Berlin will have a rabbi of its own, the result of a four-year effort spearheaded by the American Jewish Committee, it was an- nounced last week. Rabbi Isaac Neuman, a 65-year-old Auschwitz survivor, from Champaign, Illinois, will leave for East Germany in early September to assume his post and prepare for the High Holy Days. As his first rabbinical action, he will attend the In- ternational Ecumenical Con- ference in East Berlin as the official representative of the less than 600 remaining East German Jews. The Reform rabbi, who is a member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, will become the only permanent American rabbi ministering in all of the East Bloc nations.
