Policy Eased,
Soviet Claims

New York (JTA) — The head
of the Moscow OVIR emigra-
tion office said last week that
the Soviet government is ac-
ting in accordance with its
"international obligations" to
ease family reunification pro-
cedures for emigration, and
that Soviet Jews with
relatives in the West will be
permitted to join them
without obtaining an invita-
tion from relatives in Israel,
according to the National
Conference on Soviet Jewry
(NCSJ).
Rudolf Kuznetsov told the
weekly Soviet journal Novoye
Vrema that "in keeping with
the Constitution and the
ternational obligations of the
USSR, the letter and spirit of
the documents of the Com-
mittee on Security and Coop-
eration in Europe; and also of
last year's conference in Bern,
the Soviet government is
making human contacts and
issues of reunification of
families easier."

Jews
'Misinformed'
About Bork

Washington (JTA) — Depu-
ty Attorney General Arnold
Burns told a group of rabbis
last week that opposition
within the Jewish communi-
ty and elsewhere to Judge
Robert Bork is based on
"misinformation" about
President Reagan's nominee
to the vacant seat on the U.S.
Supreme Court.
A "false" image of Bork has
been presented by "some peo-
ple," who want "to achieve
political goals of their own,"
wholly unrelated to the
nomination, Burns said at a
meeting for 28 Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform rab-
bis from 13 states, sponsored
by the National Jewish Coali-
tion. The meeting was part of
a series of briefings for the
rabbis by members of the
Administration.
Burns, the second highest
ranking official in the Justice
Department and a member of
the National Jewish Coali-
tion, said a "fictional" Bork
has been portrayed who is an
extremist, opposed to civil
rights, labor union and
women's rights, among other
things.
