reprsented the realization of an
abiding nightmare for the
Saudi royal family: "They are
deeply afraid that other
Islamic states will accuse them
of not being able to maintain
proper control and will demand
that the holy places be interna-
tionalized," says Dr. Olmert.
In view of the formidable
challenge posed by Iran both to
Saudi security and to its future
control of the Islamic holy
sites, Dr. Olmert believes that
Saudi Arabia — and Kuwait —
may decide to follow the path
of appeasement, disengaging
even further from their super-
power protector.
Planning a demonstration in
Mecca while the world was
waiting for an Iranian attack
on United States warships in
the Gulf was, says Dr. Olmert,
typical of Thheran's predilection
for surprises.
He also believes that there
will be more such surprises in
the weeks to come — the kill-
ing of a Western hostage in
Lebanon, an attack on a Saudi
embassy in Europe, a suicide
mission in the Gulf, a major
new offensive against Iraq.
"There is a very wide range of
possibilities and we can expect
the Iranians to play the game
according to their own rules,"
says Dr. Olmert. "They have
threatened more attacks and
we should certainly take them
seriously." 0
