erusalem — The riot by
Iranian pilgrims which
led to the massacre in
Mecca this month was an act
of deliberate and calculated
provocation by the Iranian
authorities, according to
authoritative Israeli sources.
The Iranian pilgrims — who
were reportedly given a two-
week course in street fighting
and "ideological reinforcement"
before being dispatched to
Mecca — were described by one
source as a "human bomb"
directed against the Saudi
regime.
Israeli military sources are
also certain that most of the
deaths — 402, including 275
Iranians, according to Saudi
figures — occurred when Saudi
security forces opened fire on
the chanting, demonstrating
mob.
This is in sharp contrast to
claims by Saudi authorities
that its forces did not open fire
in the holy city, wheresweapons
are prohibited.
According to Saudi reports,
some of the victims had been
stabbed with knives that the
Iranians had concealed beneath
their robes; others were tram-
pled underfoot by the stam-
peding mob.
But Israeli military sources,
who have closely examined
videotapes of the riots, have
determined that the Saudi
security force —which is large-
ly constituted by Pakistanis —
did indeed open fire on the
rioting pilgrims, The Jewish
News has learned.
What is less certain, however,
is precisely why the Iranians
went on the rampage following
the Friday afternoon prayers at
j
the Ka'aba ("House of God")
which is regarded as the holiest
site in Islam.
Was the violence aimed at
destabilizing the vulnerable
Saudi regime, which is per-
ceived by Iran as having sided
with Iraq in the Gulf War?
Was it intended to strike at
the soft underbelly of United
States interests in a vital
strategic area?
Was it an attempt to spread
the message of Ayatollah Kho-
meini's revolution at the focal
point of Islam?
Israeli sources believe that all
three factors were involved in
the decision to explode the
"human bomb" in Mecca.
The intention of the Iranian
mullahs, say the sources, was
both to "punish" the Saudis for
their close association with
Washington and for their aid to
Iraq in the seven-year-old Gulf
War.
Moreover, the Iranians
sought to underscore their
message to the rest of the
Islamic world by making the
point in Mecca the midst of the
pilgrimage season.
Although the Saudis, along
with other members of the Gulf
Cooperation Council, are
technically neutral in the war,
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have
combined to pump $37 billion
into the Iraqi war effort since
the outbreak of hostilities in
September 1980.
Even less forgiveable in Iran-
ian eyes is that Saudi Arabia is
the principal ally of the United
States in the Gulf, an offence
that is compounded by the fact
that the Saudi rulers — de-
scribed by Ayatollah Khomeini
as "pagans and hypocrites" —
are also the custodians of
Islam's holiest shrines.
Indeed, the essential key to
understanding the timing of
