He's been a member of the board of the Jewish Education Service of North America and its forerunner, the American Association of Jewish Educa- tion since 1961 and serves as honorary chairman. He was awarded the Boston Hebrew College Lown Award in 1979 and served as a trustee of Brandeis University's Lown School from 1979 to 1983. Berman is currently honorary chairman of the University of Michigan's Hillel foundation fund- raising drive and, with his wife, Madeline, is a benefac- tor of the Fresh Air Society's Jewish Experiences For Families program.
