Dr. Lanny S. Foster, Podiatrist and Foot Surgeon is proud to announce the opening of his new office! A Kibbutz Remembers Rita Hayworth Fondly CARL ALPERT Special to The Jewish News H aifa — Some find life in Israel challenging, some find it difficult. Some look upon it as strange and puzzling, while others regard it as rewarding and fulfilling. But all of them agree on one thing: life here is intensely interesting. Dur- ing recent weeks we have noted the following: What Israel Has That They Don't: In an effort to encourage Japanese tourists to come to Israel, a trial group of 75 recently toured the country. What interested them? The conclusion was that Israel's major attraction would be its deserts, since there are none in Japan. Contributions to Civiliza- tion: Ashkenazi contribu- tions to the quality of life in Israel include democracy, liberalism, respect for the in- dividual, ethical reaction to injustice and scientific B'nai B'rak was declared the city most free of violent crime. development, writes Aryeh Ber to the editor of Kol Haifa. But at the same time, he adds, we should not overlook gefilte fish as a culinary con- tribution, and should see to it that it becomes more popular among the sabras. A Break With Military Tradition: Army kitchens, once an all-male enclave, are now being invaded by women as Israel's defense forces are training hundreds of women to break the male monopoly as chefs and cooks. Selling Ice Cubes to the Eskimos: Israeli in- dustrialists are unafraid to penetrate new markets in their attempts to boost the country's • exports. The Holyland Cosmetics Co. has just sent a trial shipment of 1,500 bottles of its Masada perfume to France, where the company smells high profits. Blintzes to Bulgaria: The export urge, again. Avraham Mashiach, a Tel Aviv restaurant owner of Bulgarian origin, has made arrangements to open a chain of restaurants in the country of his birth. Chief item on the menu will be blintzes, made according to an exclusive Israeli recipe. Who Slept With Rita Hayworth? The death of the Hollywood star not long ago led some oldtimers to recall what happened at Kibbutz Hamadia over 40 years ago. Films used to be shown in the dining room, projected on a sheet. When the Hayworth film, Gilda, was received, there was competition among the bachelor members as to whose sheet would be used for the showing. Right Name, Wrong Face: When the daily paper, Chadashot, published a report about a suspected murderer, Meir Ifergan, it printed by mistake the pic- ture of Sgt. Meir Ifergan of the Nahariya police. He demanded 10,000 shekels as damages, but when the paper offered a set of valuable educational books for his three children, he accepted. There Must Be a Reason: The city of B'nai B'rak, often described as the most religiously observant of all Israel's major cities, has for the third year running also been proclaimed by objective survey as the city most free from crimes of violence. Those Israeli Cops: Chayim Chaadi, 42, wounded by the police when he attemp- ted a bank robbery, was lock- ed up in the police hospital. During his incarceration his mother died, and as soon as his condition permitted, he asked for permission to go to her grave. The police took him there on a stretcher and even provided a minyan as background for his kaddish. Ironic Look at Israel Salary Scale: Yechiel Safra asked, in Yediot Achronot: what do the Chanukah miracle and the monthly Israeli salary have in com- mon? Reply: Each is just enough to last eight days. Stop Immigration, Save Money. The Jewish Agency estimates that the total number of immigrants to Israel during 1987 will come to 15,000. For this the Agen- cy's immigration department has a budget of $100,000,000, which means about $6,666 for each immigrant, including the many who come on their own power. The figure does not include an additional $78,000,000 for the settle- ment department. Located at: Farmbrook Medical Complex - Bldg.
