The Rosary Murders

Continued from Page 66

Rosary Murders was the first
official world premiere in
Detroit since The Betsy
premiered at Renaissance
Theatres in 1978 . . . Kienzle
was a priest at Holy
Redeemer parish which is
where the story takes place,
and also site of most of the
filming.
All net proceeds of the
benefit go to the "Class of '56
Scholarship Fund," a
Michigan organization found-
ed to provide scholarships for
deserving students of Holy
Redeemer school . . . Bobby
Laurel, producer of the film,
is a member of the Holy
Redeemer class of '56.
The Rosary Murders was
hosted by Fisher Theatre im-
pressario Joe Nederlander,
and emceed by WJR radio
personality J.P. McCarthy.
Bobby Laurel is the same
popular pianist and orchestra
leader.
The Rosary Murders stars
Donald Sutherland, Charles
Durning, Belinda Bauer and
Josef Sommer.
Those like Sid Stolsky who
have discovered Ann Sayles
Dining Room are regulars .. .
Others who remember it from
yesteryears and never knew it
was still in existence are
thrilled.
It is a dining experience of
yesterday and today . . . a con-
tinuance of satisfying results.
CHING TAO Palace,
recently opened at Piccadilly
Mall, Woodward south of
Maple in Birmingham, has
something novel on its menu
. . . trial portions from 99
cents . . . if you like the item,
they'll give you the full order
at regular price . . . There's
also junior, senior and double-
size portions of everything .. .
It's one of the few Chinese
restaurants not open on Sun-
day . . . Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Saturday, 11
a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday and
Friday til 9 p.m.
FROM LISA Kamil . . .
"Carol Steuer of the
Baltimore Jewish Times and
myself thoroughly enjoyed
our recent dinner at Norm's
Oyster Bar on Franklin Road.
The service was also very
good. Carol had shrimp
Grand Marnier and I had the
scallop and shrimp Alex-
ander."
GOOD TO SEE that a
restaurateur is the new
owner of Alia's Restaurant on
Greenfield and 11 Mile .. .
and not just an investor leav-
ing its operation up to the
employees.
Ed Farah helps his person-
nel . . . busing tables, giving
out menus, refilling coffee,
cashiering, etc.
He has 21 years of ex-
perience in the restaurant

game . . . Coach House at
University and Rochester
Road, Landmark of Troy, 15
Mile and Livernois, etc. .. .
Ed was a supervisor at five
stores for Elias Big Boy before
going into the business for
himself.
Chef Chris Hatzilis remains
at the popular 165-seater
locale . . . and people who
know Ed have trust and con-
fidence in his ability as a
restaurateur.
Barbara Herkowitz is his
head waitress . . . in charge of
seeing that the place is
always clean among her
many duties . . . following the
tradition set by former
owners Jim and Alia Sage .. .
and previously maintained by
Ed at his own restaurants .. .
The mirrors galore are clean-
ed all day and floors vacuum-
ed whenever nobody is in the
place . . . A large, beautifully
lighted fish tank is constant-
ly maintained . . . as are
hanging plants around the
restaurant.
Ed's wife, Dunia Farah,
works the cash register dur-
ing days . . . When school
begins, she will be at Alia's
full time.
Excellent waitresses like
Greetis Morales, known to
many northwest localites as
just plain "Sam," is the very
personable and efficient
popular waitress at breakfast
and lunch . . . Hard-working
evening waitress, Gina
Parolent, is alsoa big
customer-pleaser . . . and it's
not rare to see her on hands
and knees picking little
papers or whatever from the
floor.
Most of the customers come
back to Alia's . . . a very im-
portant asset in the
restaurant business . . . with
a big meaning for successful
operation . . . It's very im-
perative that a good dining
spot depend on regular
clientele.
On my visit to see Ed, Bar-
bara brought me a cold, crisp
salad, fresh lake trout, and
cantaloupe which I asked to
be served diced.
There are four tables in the
back and two in front at Alia's
. . . and the fine menu for a
neighborhood family
restaurant has not been
changed.
Alia's is open seven days a
week for breakfast, lunch and
dinner . . . with large green
awning outside and inside .. .
Soft padded booths are green
with leather seats and cloth
backs . . . amid decor of
beiges, browns and greens .. .
Chairs have wicker backs and
pictures on walls add to the
soft beauty.
Alia's is a good family
restaurant . . . the kind you

like to have in your
neighborhood.
GOOD WAITRESS Dept
. . . Cindy Zuger . . . at Golden
Mushroom, Ten Mile and
Southfield . . . pretty smile,
gracious, most efficient and
very personable.
If Golden Mushroom can
have margarine when asked
for, why can't so many other
restaurants? . . . I only use
margarine and find it difficult
to get . . . Either the
restaurant won't admit that it
doesn't use margarine in
cooking or it's melted into li-
quid for toast.
Anyway, I had all I want at
the Golden Mushroom and
was very pleased . . . Owner
Reid Ashton and Executive
Chef Milos Cihelka not only
know food, but how a
customer should be pleased.
Cindy brought us a very
delicious appetizer of smoked
Norwegian salmon with
capers and onions . . . and en-
tree of superb charbroiled
Canadian whitefish sprinkled
with parsley and red peppers.
By the way, that's not just
plain tap water you're drink-
ing or getting refills of at
Golden Mushroom . . . It's
Evian from the French Alps.
THE THREE types of ribs
now served at Blue Sky
Restaurant on W. Ten Mile
just east of Evergreen . . .
barbecue (original chargrill-
ed), mesquite and Cajun-style
. . . each has its own sauce
and seasonings.
DAVID STERN and David
Lee, local filmmakers, will
have two independent produc-
tions premiered by Wayne
State University, Sept. 12 . . .
First film, David Lee's Cur-
tains Baby Blues (27 minutes)
. . . is about a frustrated
screenwriter reduced to
desperate action as he scripts
the violent deaths of the im-
aginary characters he lives
with in his apartment .. .
David Stern's Suite Harry
(24 minutes) . . . is about a
young student who discovers
an alcoholic ex-symphony
cellist rummaging through
back alley trash cans and
urges the drunk to face his
desolation in order to regain
the dignity of his past.
The first film will be shown
at 8 p.m. . . . and the second
followed by a reception in the
McGregor arts gallery.
For more info about the
premiere, call Trudy Kieswet-
ter at Wayne, 577-2403 .
JUDY GOLDSTEIN,
folksinger, guitarist, linguist
and all-around personality
gal, will perform for
Southfield Senior Men's Club,
Sept. 16, 1:30 p.m., at McDon-
nell Towers.
Judy sings in Yiddish,
Hebrew, Russian and English.
