Intimate Dining Room

Has Long Local History

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

M

emories of nostalgic
yesteryears con-
tinue when people
hear the name "Ann Sayles
Dining Room."
Their recollections are
many . . . and a number of
former customers who fondly
recall the very popular and
most pleasant restaurant are
unaware that Ann Sayles
Dining Room is still very
much in existence . . . on 13
Mile Road just east of
Greenfield.
It was back in the mid '20s,
prior to the Depression days,
that Ann Sayles and two
female partners opened their
original, big, beautiful
restaurant, The Lexington,
across from the old General
Motors plant in Detroit . . .
When the Depression of 1929
came, few peple had money
. . . and so many wanted to
eat on credit that The Lex-
ington was forced to close its
doors.
The partners split and went
their separate ways . . . but
continued to help each other
when needed . . . Two of them
eventually opened a little tea
room on Hamilton and Webb
called Nellie Ann's, taking
the name of Ann Sayles
partner.
In the early '40s, Nellie
Ann and. Ann Sayles moved
their little tea room into the
Wilshire Hotel on West
Grand Blvd. . . . called it Ann
Sayles Tea Room . . . as the
beginning of a name that was
to become synonomous with
fine dining at low prices .. .
in the cleanest and friendliest
of atmospheres.
1956 was when Ann went
at it alone . . . moving her tea
room to Seven Mile Road near
Livernois . . . where she was
at the helm until 1961.
This is when the two sisters,
Ann Tacconelli and Helen
Stanko, bought it from Ann,
who retired for health reasons
. . . They stayed there until
1972 . . . during which period
Ann Tacconelli bought out
her sister . . . But the same
year, they were together
again . . . moving to the pre-
sent locale of Ann Sayles Din-
ing Room.
It had been a restaurant
previously . . . called Thora's
. . . and owned by one of the
original partners.
Ann Sayles Dining Room
has been at this location 15
years.
Mike Feraro took over in
the spring of 1986 . . . keeping

primarily the same menu .. .
and same decor . . . Seating is
for 100 . . . amid red
tablecloths (they were white
on Seven Mile and Livernois),
red carpeting, two walls
covered with Venetian murals
. . . Another wall has pictures
also of Venice scenes . . . The
front wall is of natural large
stone and a ceiling-to-floor
window.
Ann Sayles Dining Room is
not an overbearing
restaurant . . . It is very
clean, warm and most
intimate.
Its menu is basically the
same as before, but everyday
Mike specializes in one or two
different items for dinner.
Ann Sayles Dining Room is
best known for its wholesome
home cooking and dinners
that include everything from
appetizer to salad choices to
potato and vegetable choices
to many desserts to coffee,
and hot or iced tea . . . and
very reasonable prices.
A neon sign in the window
saying "Ann Sayles Dining
Room" is the same one that
beckoned many happy
customers on Seven Mile near
Livernois.
Yes, Ann Sayles Dining
Room is still in existence .. .
very much so . . . on 13 Mile
Road east of Greenfield .. .
open six days a week .. .
Tuesday through Saturday,
11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for
lunch and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for
dinner . . . and Sunday, 12
noon to 8 p.m. for dinner.
RADISSON Plaza Hotel
on Northwestern Service
Drive will open Sept. 6 .. .
Grand opening is slated for
Oct. 15 . . . Bill Kirkhuff is
general manager of the new
beautiful facility with room
for almost 400 at catered af-
fairs . . . and two restaurants.
12TH SEASON of Attic
Theatre begins Sept. 11, 8
p.m., with Dogman's Last
Stand . . . story of an ex-Hell's
Angel laid-off steel worker,
ex-biker and collector of stray
dogs.
Attic Theatre was founded
in 1975 and is Detroit's off-
Broadway resident, non-profit
theater company . . . with
shows on Third Ave. at Grand
Blvd. in the New Center
District.
"THE ROSARY Murders,"
first full-length feature film
shot entirely in Detroit, made
its screen debut in a benefit
world premiere last night at
the Fisher Theatre.
Based on the novel written
by William Kienzle, The
